On Monday, @dreamacademycharterschool officially welcomed its first class of students as a public charter school in Baltimore City! Formerly Thomas Jefferson Elementary/Middle School, Dream Academy is operated in partnership with Arts for Learning Maryland, bringing A4L's arts-integrated learning model into the school day. As Maryland's first artist-integrated public charter school, Dream Academy took five years to become a reality for Arts for Learning. Eight full-time A4L-trained professional teaching artists are working alongside certified teachers in the classroom every day, in an arts-integrated model echoing our successful Summer Arts for Learning Academy! We welcomed the new CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools Dr. Jermaine Dawson; Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners Chair, Robert Salley; City Councilman Paris Gray, and delegate Sandy Rosenberg to the school to celebrate with us this week. by @arts4learningmd

Back-to-school season is here, and while you're getting classrooms ready, it's also the perfect time to think about how to build connection, confidence, and character with our students.

Awakening the Gifts of Character from WombWork Productions (@wombworker) uses theatre, music, and dance to help educators create a classroom culture where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow. 💛

This week, we gathered at headquarters for our annual artist meeting, and as always, we started with the art. Our teaching artists breathe joy, creativity, inspiration, and discovery to schools and classrooms every day. They spark student curiosity and a deeper understanding of subject matter and self, and most importantly, they foster a love of learning in our Maryland students.
We are so lucky to partner with the most talented artists, musicians, dancers, poets, performers, puppeteers, animators, photographers, singers, writers, percussionists, jewelers, storytellers, and beyond to bring the joy of the arts to Maryland students.

If you know Arts for Learning, you know that every A4L meeting starts with the art! Last week, Sherri Fisher, our Chief of Innovation and Workforce Development, began the fall board meeting's Start with the Art with a question: Can you make a face? Inspired by artist Hanoch Piven's philosophy that art is play, the activity served as a joyful, creative way for everyone to greet each other.

Bring this creative practice into your own workspace or meetings! Whether appreciating a short performance together, creating a mini art piece, or playing a quick round of theatre games, spending 5-10 minutes doing something creative with colleagues can set a collaborative tone, break the ice, and bring out the unexpected! by @arts4learningmd

The wonders and magic of world travel can begin right in the classroom.

Cultural experiences in schools give students opportunities to explore histories and art forms beyond their everyday lives, helping build a deeper appreciation for the world around them.

Teaching artist group Ologundê brings high-energy assemblies to students. Ologundê's "Axé Puro" assembly brings Brazil's vibrant music, movement, and traditions to students through dance, capoeira, and cultural storytelling.

This #Artsineducationweek we are celebrating the opportunity to bring the transformative power of the arts into educational spaces. Did you know it’s Community Schools Coordinators Appreciation Week?
“Community Schools” are schools that serve as physical hubs, giving students, families, and the community meaningful opportunities to engage in collaborative decision-making. In Baltimore City, nearly all @baltcityschools schools are community schools, and each school has a community schools coordinator embedded within the school. The job of a community school coordinator is to connect the full school community with local organizations, families, and resources to support student success and community wellness. Arts for Learning is proud to be a community schools lead agency, currently hosting three fabulous coordinators in City Schools: Mr. Jabril Morris at @mountroyalems; Ms. Jessica Vaughan at @gsachargers; and Mr. Edward Pinder at @collingtonsquareems. Each helps to build community, connect families with important resources, and, of course, center the arts and access to them.
Are you connected to a community school in Maryland? Show some love for your community school coordinator this week! by @arts4learningmd

"Two years down at Arts for Learning 🎨✨

My journey with @arts4learningmd started seven years ago when I joined as a 17-year-old intern in the Bloomberg Arts Internship program. I fell in love with the mission then, and I never really left!

Reflecting on these last two years on staff, I'm so grateful for how much I've grown as a professional. Working behind the scenes on the administrative side of the arts has been incredibly fulfilling, whether I'm diving into RFPs or designing internal communications to build community among our staff.

One of my favorite highlights has been supporting our youth during the summer and visiting high schools across the city to help grow the very same program that started it all for me."

Huge thanks to Mark King, Ed.D and Kristina Berdan for seeing the potential in me for this role and just an overall thank you to my entire A4L family for an unforgettable two years.

Here's to many more milestones ahead!

As Maryland heads back to school this month, we're gearing up for a busy fall of bringing dynamic arts programming to our schools!
For teaching artist Josette Young, dance is a way to share joy, culture, and discovery with even our youngest learners.

Originally from Panama, Josette introduces children to the music, movement, and colorful traditions of Carnival, sharing the joy and beauty of Afro-Latinx culture through dance. Her work draws on her own memories of these traditions and brings them to life for our youngest learners.

As a Maryland Wolf Trap-trained teaching artist, Josette works alongside PreK and Kindergarten educators during classroom residencies focused on literacy and STEM. Together, they use movement and other performing arts strategies to bring core lessons to life while supporting creativity, participation, and school readiness. These embedded professional development residencies give educators new tools they can continue using long after the residency ends! by @arts4learningmd
