Lab XL: Care, Burnout, Access & Inclusion in the Cultural Sector
An industry-facing panel & Q&A

Cultural workers across the UK and Thailand are navigating burnout, overwork, and the pressure of juggling multiple jobs and roles, often without the infrastructure or recognition to sustain them. Too often, care is treated as optional rather than structural.

Join us for an embodied, conversational session that starts with a short yoga practice before opening into dialogue. Raidene Carter (@artsadmin) presents on care, burnout, access and inclusion using case studies from the Thai cultural and community sector — followed by open discussion and Q&A with Susannah Tantemsapya (Creative Migration), facilitators Nawarat “Nammon” Welployngam and Tharinee “Palm” Ratanasatien.

📅 Friday, October 9
🕑 14:00–17:00

It’s a wrap on the first part of the Lab XL program in London! Susannah Tantemsapya (Creative Migration) travelled over to Artsadmin to co-host and participate in four Lab XL events: Webinar, Networking Lunch, Happy Hour with Kevin J. Patel (@imkevinjpatel) and a Homework Club.

Lab XL is a producer exchange program by Creative Migration and Artsadmin, supported by the British Council’s Connections Through Culture grant (@britishcouncil). The exchange looks at leadership as stewardship through reflection and sustainability. The first part of the program took place in London and will wrap up in Bangkok in October 2026.

It was amazing to have conversations with new faces as well as reconnect with fellow culture & climate friends throughout our UK trip during London Climate Action Week. Susannah was warmly welcomed to Toynbee Studios, reconnected with Tiffany Singh (Bangkok 1899 Artist-in-Residence) (@tiffany.singh.artist), Tharinee “Palm” Ratanasatien (@palmtari), Nawarat “Nammon” Welployngam (@nammon_i_am) and James Olivo (@jameywamey) (Lab X artists), Nene Camara (@njcnjcnjcnjcnjc) (Lab X artist producer) and Nassy Konan, reunited with Thiago Jesus (@jesusthiago) from the G20 Culture & Climate Seminar and Nina Netuzhylova (@netuzhylova) (Bangkok 1899 - Architecture consultant) , met the New Art Exchange team in Nottingham (BRIDGE partner) (@new_art_exchange), went to LCAW events and even visited Stonehenge during the Summer Solstice!

Thank you everyone for making this trip very colorful, and working through one of the hottest summers in London. More information and reflections on our Lab XL Part One experience coming soon! by @artsadm

As part of our Lab residencies 2026, it’s been a pleasure to have Zhaolin Zhou with us at Toynbee Studios this week.

Zhaolin is a theatre maker, migrant artist trained at Curious School of Puppetry. He explores immigration and belonging through puppetry, storytelling and live performance. He uses objects, miniature worlds to create a detached perspective, reflecting on personal stories while creating space for connection and catharsis. He is exploring using mapping to represent being in-between places, trace the meanings and memories we attach to them, and how these are shaped by forces beyond our control. His performance Walking Cats, about living in Kilburn as a new migrant during lockdown through a LEGO cat, won the Origins Award at VAULT Festival 2023.

“During the Artsadmin residency, I will continue my exploration of migration and belonging, drawing on my journey of having to leave the UK and return to China because of my visa situation. I will use writing and mapping to reflect on this experience. I’m excited to continue working with the model box and illustrated cards created for Walking Cats, exploring new meanings and ways of performing with these objects. They represent Kilburn and my hometown in China, two places I have called home. I’m interested in what new stories might emerge from bringing these places together, and in finding more environmentally friendly ways of making work.” – Zhaolin

We’re thrilled to have Naresh Kaushal at our home, Toynbee Studios this week as part of our Lab residency programme.

I am a multidisciplinary artist who combines socially engaged practice, abstraction and experimental storytelling to explore the lived experience of power in society. Focusing particularly on underrepresented voices I mix visual and participatory arts to create spaces for agency, ownership, critique and empowerment amongst participants and audiences. A filmmaker who developed a participatory practice I am drawn to interdisciplinary ways of working, with the different strands of my approach coming together in the form of playable installations. Place and the exploration of different modalities of audience are recurring themes in my work.”

“In Lab 26 I want to develop my ongoing body of work Dreams of a person from playable gallery installation to site specific participatory experience. I want to explore how LARP and Theatre of The Oppressed can transform the piece into a collective reimagining of place and memory foregrounding inclusion and intersectionality. The work understands archive as collective memory (not historical object) and place as physical space performed. I will investigate how embodiment can harness these ideas to create space for resonance over time and space. Unpicking narratives of power and creating conditions for critique, solidarity and resistance.” - Naresh

We’re excited to have Brahim Jumaa at Toynbee Studios this week as part of our Lab residency programme.

Brahim Jumaa is a Syrian theatre-maker, dramaturg, and workshop facilitator working across performance, dramaturgy, and collaborative creation. His practice combines devised and physical approaches with research-driven dramaturgy, creating intimate, visually precise, and socially and politically engaged theatrical experiences. He often works with meta-theatrical structures, non-linear dramaturgies, and minimal scenographies. His ongoing research explores imagination and its relationship to lived reality, particularly how images, narratives, and anticipation shape what we perceive and experience. He is an IETM Global Connector 2026.

“I’ll be spending the residency developing the performance language of Where’s My Heart?!. I want to explore how imagination can become physical through the use of movement, sound, objects, text and light, and how these elements can shape the relationship between the performer, the space and the audience. I’ll work with the central image of a child searching for his missing heart, using improvisation and practical experiments to develop the characters, atmosphere and dramaturgical structure of the piece.” – Brahim
