Class of 2030 out and about! 🌆
On Sept. 18th, our freshmen hit the streets of New York again. We strolled the Highline, soaking in the skyline views and green space above the city, then stepped inside the Whitney Museum to take in some incredible American art. Meet Christian Clinton, rising senior in Wagner College’s Arts Administration program! This summer, Christian served as Lead Producer for a brand-new Off-Broadway festival, “Making It Happen: Festival of 15 Minute Musicals,” at The Theater Center in Times Square. In Christian’s own words:

“In my role as Lead Producer, I was responsible for leading my team of four student interns through the development of this festival; coaching them on how to dissect each submission based on originality and development, and how to present our shortlist of musicals to the leadership at The Theater Center for approval; and delegating tasks that included drafting emails to the creative teams and building promotional assets for each musical. I also drafted contracts for all creative teams and press releases, developed and curated our IG page (@mihfestival), developed schedules for rehearsal spaces and technical runs, and solved problems regarding any technical, financial, and internal affairs.

It was a very challenging and rewarding experience as producing new work (especially in festivals) is very time-consuming and requires a lot of debate and discussion on which musicals best fit the criteria of the festival, how the audience will respond to twelve new musicals, and how to divide them up into four nights of material.

Everything that I’ve learned so far at Wagner has given me the tools to put on this great project that, up until now, I’ve only dreamed about. From leadership and management to marketing and production, I was able to take what I learned in the classroom and apply it to a real-world project. Being able to give these artists a platform to see their original work come to life has become a huge milestone in my development. As a producer, I’ve been able to help create an environment where up-and-coming musical theater writers can work together and create new experiences for themselves and their peers. Building something from the ground up and promoting those who want to make great theater has shown me what I am capable of as an arts administrator.” by @artsadmin_wagner

Sophia Nelson is a junior majoring in Arts Administration and minoring in Writing and Theater. She also writes for the Wagnerian and Wagner Beacon, performs with Wagner College Opera, and is the Development Chair for Shakespeare on the Oval.

This summer, she began working with Asbury Park Theater Company on their youth production of “Footloose” as a Production and Marketing intern. Her jobs included marketing projects for the theater, being at rehearsals each day to assist with the theater camp program, working as a stagehand, and doing hair and makeup for the production. Sophia will continue to work with APTCO virtually throughout the school year!

After the closing of “Footloose”, Sophia returned to her internship as a Theater Camp Administrator at Algonquin Arts Theater. Her work includes facilitating communication between parents and teachers, managing paperwork and forms, and assistant teaching the theater camps and classes. This is her second summer in this position, but she has worked as an Assistant Teacher at Algonquin since 2020. Her favorite part of this job is seeing students’ creativity blossom—and also the gifts students bestow upon her, including but not limited to sparkly hair extensions and pink tiaras. by @artsadmin_wagner
