A few weeks ago, @mariontamponlajarriette filmed at CERN as part of the development of Hidden Songs of the Dark Valley. Encompassing collaborative intuitive writing and experimental visualisation sessions, a film, and an installation, the project explores the role of intuition and dreaming in scientific and artistic research, interweaving scientific language, poetic speculation, and imagery drawn from quantum physics. Hidden Songs of the Dark Valley is an ongoing production by Marion Tampon Lajarriette as part of the @artsatcern Resonance residency, a partnership framework between @cern, @ge_culture, and @ville_de_geneve, with support from the CERN & Society Foundation. CERN: Through the Artists’ Eyes — Emilija Škarnulytė 72 years ago today, on 29 September 1954, the convention establishing CERN was ratified by its founding Member States. We’re marking this anniversary through the lens of our current #CollideStockholm artist in residence, @emilijaskarnulyte, who has been exploring the Laboratory’s experiments and facilities as she develops her project, Memory of the Unseen. #CERN #ArtsatCERN 📸 Courtesy of the artist by @artsatcern
👋 Welcome to @cern, Emilija Škarnulytė! We are delighted to announce that @emilijaskarnulyte has arrived at @cern to begin the first part of her #CollideStockholm residency, ahead of the second part of the residency at @nobelprizemuseum in November. During her time at the Laboratory, she will explore what she describes as “fragile spaces where the invisible becomes briefly perceptible”: environments such as detector caverns, tunnels, magnetic infrastructures and data-processing systems that enable the detection of particle interactions. At the Nobel Prize Museum, she will investigate the institution as a site where narratives of scientific discovery enter the cultural sphere and collective memory, through research into archival materials, exhibition strategies and historical narratives. “How exactly can we reconstruct an event that has taken place in the past? How much can we reconstruct that in the present?” In her #Connect residency, Amanda E. Metzger (@amanda.e.metzger) focused on the reconstruction of particle collision events at @cern, interrogating the information gaps, challenges and possibilities that arise when inferring past events from the data and measurements recorded by particle detectors, and relating these questions to her own practice, rooted in memory. Upcoming residency: Emilija Škarnulytė for #CollideStockholm 💥 In just a few weeks, artist @emilijaskarnulyte will begin the first part of her two-month #CollideStockholm residency. As the recipient of the Collide Stockholm international residency award, in partnership with the Nobel Prize Museum @nobelprizemusem, Škarnulytė will spend one month at @cern, followed by one month at the Nobel Prize Museum, continuing the development of a new work. At CERN, she will engage with scientists, engineers, and theorists to explore event reconstruction, decay signatures, detector sensitivity, and the temporal behaviour of experimental data — focusing on what she describes as “thresholds.” Credit: Still from Aphotic Zone, 2022. Micro to Macro, Past to Present During her #ConnectIndia residency at CERN, Marie Matusz (@mariematusz) had the opportunity to investigate, observe and document what happens in some of the Laboratory’s most important particle detection experiments and the laboratories that come together to form them. From the experimental to the theoretical, and from the micro parts that make up these vast machines to the invisible particle interactions they’re designed to capture with exceptional spatial precision, this deep engagement with CERN’s scientists, engineers and theorists is fundamental to the development of her project, Body in the Dark. Pictured here are visits to the NA64 experiment, the Scintillator Lab, and the Linear accelerator 2 (LINAC2) – the latter an important starting point for the protons used in experiments at CERN, active from 1978 to 2018. Monika Emmanuelle Kazi (@monikaemmanuelle) spent June and July at CERN as the selected artist for the Resonance residency, in partnership with the Ville de Genève and the Canton and Republic of Geneva. During her residency, Kazi explored connecting the re-tracing of a particle’s journey to diasporic memory, diving into concepts like time, symmetry and quantum theory through conversations with CERN scientists. Visits to spaces like the Crystal Laboratory and the Thin Film and Glass Lab have introduced her to new materials – especially metals — reshaping her understanding of vision itself, and sparking a growing fascination with erosion: the traces and shadows materials leave behind over time. 🔗Read the full story on how art and physics are meeting at CERN at the link in bio.
