Faculty Spotlight | ‘An ethos of collaboration’Ojeya Cruz Banks and Marion Ramírez, professors of dance at Denison, had been working together on choreography when the Eisner Center for the Performing Arts, in a very real sense, spoke to them.A project they were calling "Mareas," Spanish for “tides,” was growing into an exploration of the importance of oceans and the common threads in their separate island heritages — Ramírez’s in Puerto Rico and Cruz Banks’ in Guåhan|Guam and the African diaspora.“We were constantly crossing paths with our music colleagues and listening to their amazing music, and we said, ‘You know what, there is a lot of fantastic artistry in this space,’” Cruz Banks said. “‘Why don’t we create some collaboration?’”That spark of inspiration resulted in "Mareas/Tides," a 50-minute interdisciplinary performance that combines dance, storytelling, singing, music, visual imagery, and improvisation. The performance traces island cosmologies and diasporic geographies of the Caribbean, Atlantic, and Pacific seas, as well as the gravitational power of the moon.Read full story at link in bio. #artsatdenison #dancedenison #denisonproud by @artsatdenison

🩰 As campers work towards their final Summer Tutti performance, we're highlighting some special moments from this week of fun and exploration. During electives, students from all disciplines worked on their drumming, salsa dancing, and the Zimbabwean Mbira. We even made it to the volleyball court, the biological reserve for a hike, and the pool. On Thursday, students combined their respective skills in small collaborative performances which will be incorporated into Saturday's final performance. Come out to see our amazing dancers, actors, singers, and musicians in just two days. We can't wait to watch the hard work of our young but talented campers come this weekend! 🎻 #denisonproud #denison #artsatdenison #summertutti #denisonuniversity by @artsatdenison

🎤 Kicking off Summer TUTTI Performing Arts Camp strong by asking our campers what they're excited for in the upcoming week. Musicians, theatre makers, and dancers come together for eight days of lighting, drama technique, vocal lessons, chamber rehearsals, orchestral music, new styles of dance, and so much more. Combining these disciplines allows our students to explore new ideas and expand their collaborative abilities while refining their personal instrument, voice, or acting skills. We'll be heading to the biological reserve, pool, and a scavenger hunt among other activities, and we at Denison are so happy to be able to host this multidisciplinary experience for high school students. Make sure to follow along this week and check out Summer TUTTI next summer for your talented high school artist! 🧡 #denisonsummertutti #denisonproud #denisonu #artsatdenison by @artsatdenison
