Nice to meet you! I wanted to do this for my birthday and it just passed, so hey I’m Steph 👋🏼
.
I drew a lot as a kid and much less as I got older. I started drawing again in 2018 (with Naruto fan art 🍥), and I’ve kept at it ever since. It’s great to be back with one of my first loves in life.
.
I’m also a design engineer in the aerospace industry 🚀 My degrees are in electrical engineering, and I specialize in FPGA/ASIC design and digital image processing (I sometimes use my own compression algorithms on my art!). I cherish my time for hobbies, but I count myself as very blessed to be in a career that I genuinely enjoy as well.
.
Been wanting to do a “Meet the Artist” for awhile, so if you’d like to know anything else, let me know in the comments!

Things I heard at my last art markets 💖 I try to strike conversations with everyone, but I’ve learned some folks just wanna browse without all my yapping lol
.
Vending at local markets and festivals has been a ton of fun and a great learning experience so far. Thank you to everyone who’s stopped by my tables or in general, been supportive of this new adventure!

You’ll get through this because you always do 💖
.
This has been a year of many first’s for me, and I’ve needed to give myself this reminder through them all. Just want to pass it along for anyone else who needs it 💕

I’ll keep making them anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️💖
.
Fun fact: My art is seldom created with the intention of making it a shop product (the Office Cats are a special exception 🐱👔). I usually figure that part out later, which adds an extra lil thrill for me when I see the Punks and comic panels take a physical form.

bye, imposter syndrome 👋🏼 i had enough of you in engineering school
.
When it comes to my art and all of my creative dreams, I still have doubts. There are even days where I wonder if I’m really meant to do any of this. But they’re never enough to stop me from doing what I love. I hope you can say the same for yourself 💖

Nods to the motherland in my art 🇵🇭 They’ve always been there and always will be.
.
October is Filipino American History Month (FAHM) 🇵🇭🇺🇸 The focus of FAHM is specifically history rather than heritage, so a fun fact for you:
.
October was chosen for FAHM to commemorate the arrival of the first Filipinos in the continental U.S. on October 18, 1587. This landing occurred in what is now Morrow Bay, California. This predates even the landing of the Mayflower Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock in December 1620.
.
As a first-gen in this country, I always thought this was an interesting piece of history. Stay tuned for more this month!
.
My webcomic Bulgogi Punks takes place in a fictional world, but it holds many references to cultures in our own, exploring themes of diaspora and how my characters navigate existing “between worlds”.
.
Slide 1 features Bakunawa, the moon-eating dragon from various mythologies of the Philippines 🌕🐉 Swipe to learn the other references! ✨

The subway ghosts are heavily based on the Aswang and Manananggal from Filipino folklore.
—

This panel from Bulgogi Punks Phrase 4 features a hologram banner that says “para sa inang bayan” (“for the motherland”) written in Baybayin, a Philippine script used to write Tagalog and several other languages.
—

Nell is building a parol, a type of Christmas lantern from the Philippines.
—

Nell’s top is a barong made of organza and embroidered with gold (another character who owns a barong is Cane 💖 his is made of piña seda).
—

The aircon from Bulgogi Punks Phrases 1-2 (and maybe beyond 👀) because no matter how advanced the tech gets in this comic, nothing beats a good wall unit.

They’re out there, you just need to find them 💖
.
No shade to anyone who knows me and is more of a lurker btw. I see a lot of takes about “why people IRL don’t support you”, “why people don’t support you til you make it”, etc. I think a lot of those takes are probably true for some people, and the frustrations they bring creatives are entirely valid… But artist to artist, I think it’s important to not dwell on that type of dialogue. And to be honest, I don’t think it’s that deep for everyone either. Just keep going, and you’ll find the people your art is for— and through it all, I hope one of those people is still yourself 💖

Would you rather have a Chainsaw Man son or Junior Punks daughter? 💭 Here is some art of my characters Kolya, Koji, and Cane. Out of everyone in the cast, they probably wish Punks was a slice-of-life comedy the most 🃏
.
New art drops next month 🩶 I was preoccupied with shop and market stuff for a bit, but I’ve fully shifted back to my many WIPs now. Thank you for your patience on this front!
