After taking part in the Youth Arts Ed Council where she served as a member and a Youth Facilitator, Alexa finished her first year at Northwestern University, where she studies global health. Throughout that time, she has delivered research papers at global health conferences and joined advocacy organizations specializing in health equity and the arts. This summer, she gained additional knowledge through internships at a pharmaceutical company and a health communications consultancy that helped her understand the possibilities of research and advocacy in real life.

Her experience at Arts Ed NJ showed her that leadership does not necessarily mean being the loudest one in the group—it means knowing how to use your voice while making it comfortable for other people to express themselves. Through the Council, she developed a stronger interest in advocacy and became an expert on the problems of equitable housing and representation of Black women in medicine, as well as access to art education in less affluent communities.

What would she like to recommend for future participants? "Be loud and proud!" One should never be afraid of sharing his/her opinions, asking questions, and trying to bring new ideas in the right way.

Meer was part of our very first Youth Arts Education Council cohort, and his journey since then shows exactly why this work matters.

Now a college junior, Meer credits the program with teaching him how to facilitate hard conversations and communicate with stakeholders, skills he still uses every day. This past March, as an Arts Ed NJ alumnus, he traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with key figures in NJ education policy.

"Arts Ed NJ has opened up so many doors for me," he says. "My biggest piece of advice for future participants is to put yourself out there and stay involved."

Growing up in a small suburb, Meer says the Council exposed him to people and perspectives he might never have met otherwise, shaping how he understands NJ's education systems today.

These days, alongside his studies, he's exploring recreational photography, most recently capturing the "beauty and warmth" of D.C. during a summer internship there.

Proud of you, Meer! 🎨
