✨ OPEN CALL: BOHÉMIENNE ✨

Era Contemporary and The Arts League of Philadelphia invite visual artists, writers, and publishers to submit work for BOHÉMIENNE: A Transhistorical State of Mind, curated by Jo Gamel and Jessica Libor.

Bohemia is not a decorative style or historical period. It is a recurring strategy of self-invention and resistance to prescribed ways of living.

Moving across history, geography, and creative disciplines, BOHÉMIENNE explores the enduring impulse to choose imagination over conformity, beauty over utility, and artistic courage over convention.

We welcome visual art, literature, publications, and multidisciplinary work that embodies freedom, experimentation, private ritual, collective life, chosen identity, and the radical act of authoring one’s own measures of beauty, belonging, achievement, and success.

Submission deadline: Sunday, August 30, 2026 at 11:59 PM
Exhibition: October 2–22, 2026
Opening reception: Sunday, October 11, 5:30–8:30 PM
Location: The Arts League of Philadelphia
4226 Spruce Street, Philadelphia

Submit through the link in bio.

We cannot wait to discover your work! ✨

Wa G'wan! Free Live Music for your viewing pleasure this Saturday, July, 11th at the Arts League, as part of the incredible America // América show's programming day, and featuring acts by @karliamusic @theofficialstefahn & @soundsbyroughdraft

I truly had a blast bringing these artists together and hope you'll come out, see some incredible art and hear some great tunes.

We'll have a bar, and tunes in the backyard so wear your dancing shoes. 😎

Co-curated by Debora Reaves Charmelus and Linda Fernandez, presented by The Arts League in partnership with Kolektivo Sin Nombre, America // América is a group exhibition featuring Latine and Caribbean artists whose work examines the complex meanings of identity, belonging, memory, and power across the Americas.
Opening during the same week as the United States’ Semiquincentennial celebrations, America // América challenges conventional understandings of what constitutes “America.” The exhibition invites audiences to reconsider geographic, cultural, and historical boundaries that often center the United States while overlooking the interconnected histories of Latin America, the Caribbean, and their diasporas.
The exhibition asks: What are the “two Americas” that exist simultaneously in our collective imagination? How do they influence, reflect, and contradict one another? Through diverse artistic practices, participating artists respond to these questions while addressing three central themes: Voices, Visions, and Spirituality.
The exhibition brings together perspectives from artists living within and across multiple cultural identities, highlighting both the profound influence of Caribbean and Latin American cultures on the United States and the enduring impact of U.S. imperial policies throughout the region. By centering these narratives and forefronting voices from Latin America and the diaspora, America // América offers a timely reflection and proposes a more expansive understanding of American history and identity.
Many thanks to @leewayfound for supporting documentation for the exhibit 🙏🏼✨🫶🏼 taken in University City Arts League by @artsleaguephl
