đŸ„čđŸŽ¶ SMILIN' THROUGH đŸŽ‰đŸ™đŸ» Today we celebrate eight and a half decades of Frank Borzage's Technicolor masterpiece starring Jeanette MacDonald, Brian Aherne and Gene Raymond. A musical remake of Jane Murfin and Jane Cowl's 1919 play, this third and final film iteration was an all-stop pulling production for producer Victor Saville and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This beautiful ballad is Moonyean and Sir John's premarital waltz before Jeremy Wayne takes the young bride's life due to his fatal jealousy. Already associated with the property's previous screen adaptations, it seemed fitting for Jeanette MacDonald's gorgeous voice and looks to give this selection Tinseltown immortality. Gene Raymond was her husband at the time yet their marriage was practically arranged by mogul Louis B. Mayer whereas Jeanette Anna MacDonald's true love (on and off the screen!) was Nelson Ackerman Eddy. He actually appears as an extra in the wedding sequence. Let's raise a glass of Port and go hunting for an old house to find the love of our lives in on this eve of October 31, 1941 for her eyes of green will always keep smilin' through! @tcm @warnerarchive @amazonmgmstudios @warnerbrosepics @martinguitar @guitarcenter @berkleecollege @berkleearmp #singer #guitar #cover #jeanettemacdonald #fyp by @artsmith2001
đŸ·đŸ˜‚ IT’S ALMOST 85 YEARS AGO BUT I CAN SEE IT AS IF IT WERE YESTERDAY! đŸ„ȘđŸ‘°đŸŒâ€â™€ïž Time flies, doesn’t it? Unc Johnny and Aunt Moonyean are now doing their waltz up there while Ken and I indulge in the most 🐐’d vintage Port he saved for today. We might even go on a little spooky walk at night but let’s just look out for thunder. I am grateful that the little brown road winding over the hill and the cot by the sea still smile through with every wedding anniversary. Reverend Harding is now our fave babysitter given we have two of our own, a boy and a girl. Dear Jerry and Moonyean are the happiest little darlings ever and I still have the ring that belonged to my great great great aunt. Enjoy the ball tonight and don’t scare any of the sheep on your way down from the hills because there’s a service tomorrow morning. Love, laugh and smile through at everybody! 🎊💍 Happy 85th to SMILIN’ THROUGH!!! 💘🧁  Love can heal and hatred can devastate yet any war is always won by those who show strength, which is rooted in forgiveness and peace. One of the the most exquisite love stories ever told, this Technicolor masterpiece was the third film incarnation of Jane Cowl and Jane Murfin’s 1919 stage success and is both a sight and sound to behold. Sir John Carteret is an elderly aristocrat in Victorian England who leads a reclusive and depressed life yearning for his long deceased wife Moonyean. When her sister’s orphaned daughter Kathleen is taken into the house, Sir John takes a liking to her and she grows up to be the very image of her aunt. Kathleen falls for Kenneth Wayne, an American who is joining the service in the newly started Great War. When Sir John finds out, he bitterly disapproves as it turns out Ken’s father had been the man who shot Moonyean to death at their wedding due to a case of extreme jealousy almost fifty years prior. After forbidding his niece to see the man she loves, John is visited by Moonyean’s spirit, who tells him building a barrier between the young lovers will draw her further away. When a wounded Ken informs Kathleen about his coming departure back to America, Sir John decides to take the young man into his home yet he dies before the lovers reach can him. Moonyean’s spirit, however, emerges in the garden as well as John’s younger self and they both leave Earth on their wedding carriage passing Ken and Kathleen driving together in a car. Jeanette MacDonald and Brian Aherne brilliantly lead the cast, supported by Gene Raymond, Ian Hunter, Frances Robinson, Patrick O’Moore and Jackie Horner. Scripted by Donald Ogden Stewart and John Balderston with a beautiful Herbert Stothart score, Smilin’ Through was produced by Victor Saville and directed by the legendary Frank Borzage. Even though October 31, 1941 was 85 years ago, Moonyean and John’s love is one that will live and smile through eternity as will Kathleen and Ken’s! @tcm @warnerarchive @amazonmgmstudios @warnerbrosepics #jeanettemacdonald #brianaherne #generaymond #ianhunter #frankborzage by @artsmith2001
đŸ„łđŸ’˜ Unwrapping Frank Borzage’s SMILIN’ THROUGH on its 85th anniversary!!! â›ȘïžđŸŸ On October 31, 1941 the world got to experience this brilliantly conceived Technicolor classic as only Hollywood’s greatest maker of musicals could render. A story of heartbreak, reconciliation, forgiveness but, most importantly, true love, this play was made into a screen attraction on three occasions. The first time around Norma Talmadge made a hit out of it with no dialogue, Norma Shearer gave a terrific performance in the silver shades of black and white but the Queen of Song, Miss Jeanette MacDonald, gave it music and her gorgeous red of the hair and eyes of green are still smilin’ through eight and a half decades later! Never build barriers between those who love, enjoy your life and await your call patiently for true affection is more powerful than anything life may ever bring us!!! @tcm @warnerarchive @amazonmgmstudios @warnerbrosepics #jeanettemacdonald #brianaherne #generaymond #frankborzage #unboxing by @artsmith2001
đŸ§”đŸ»â€â™‚ïžâš”ïž TIRALALA, TIRALALA, YOU’LL LAUGH OUT LOUD!!! đŸ¶đŸ€Ł Hello, my friends! I cannot believe it has been this hot of a minute since I pulled that one on Maria. Today I might even bring out the old costume just for the occasion. I’m mighty happy that things are clarified and taken care of but my wife is still a bit of a wolfess (only when taking bows!) and I must say Pugsie and Liesl will keep on eavesdropping as long as we all live. In the end, sometimes it’s just the nature of the opposite sex and FYI I am definitely not made of chocolate but still love Maria with all my beating heart. Lemme go tune the balalaika (not for Ilona this time around!) and get ready for our little masquerade tonight; Pugsie should be a certain NYC ballet teacher for all I care as long as Nijinsky and Mickey Rooney can do the Rhumba. Enjoy the frolic and don’t eat too many soldiers! Karl P.S.: Just for tonight’s performance I’ll go by Vassily Vassilievitch!!! @delruthasc @tcm @warnerarchive @amazonmgmstudios @warnerbrosepics #nelsoneddy #risestevens #nigelbruce #roydelruth #memes by @artsmith2001
đŸ’‚đŸ»đŸŽ‚Happy 85th to THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIER!!! đŸ«đŸŽ‰ Hollywood’s greatest baritone practically started a future fellow legend’s career by starring in an adaptation of the most iconic operettas of all time as only Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer could terrifically translate into the screen premiering on October 31, 1941. Karl Lang and Maria Lanyi are an extraordinarily successful stage couple yet not as much in their private life as man and wife. Maria is a bit of a flirt and always seizes the chance to attract the attention of other men which makes her husband doubt her devotion. To test her fidelity Karl masquerades as Russian singer Vassily Vassilievitch and immediately thinks his idea is sheer genius as she seemingly falls for his alter ego. Their romance evolves up to the point when Karl pretends he is leaving town, which enables him to take what he refers to as the greatest performance of life on a longer run. The more Maria’s affection grows, the greater her husband’s satisfaction becomes regarding his endeavor yet he is pretty much convinced his wife is a first rate bigamist. When Karl finally decides it’s time to reveal Vassilievitch’s real identity, Maria tells him she knew all the time and just played along but sweetly confesses nobody on Earth can kiss the way her husband does. Nelson Eddy and RisĂ« Stevens play Maria and Karl along with Nigel Bruce, Florence Bates, Dorothy Raye, Nydia Westman, Max Barwyn and Charles Judels. Leonard Lee and Keith Winter outdid themselves with an amazingly witty screenplay yet, given the studio did not get the rights to the original operetta’s story, they based it on Fernc Molnar’s “The Guardsman” (made into an earlier film with Alfred Lunt and Lyn Fontanne). Producer Victor Saville got the legendary Herbert Stothart and an up and coming Blonislau Kaper to adapt and score the film with Roy Del Ruth as director. Boasting unforgettable songs, comedy and choreography as well as three Academy Award nominations, The Chocolate Soldier remains as entertaining and enduring eight and a half decades later! @delruthasc @tcm @warnerarchive @amazonmgmstudios @warnerbrosepics #nelsoneddy #risestevens #nigelbruce #florencebates #roydelruth by @artsmith2001
đŸ›¶đŸŽž THE ROCK AND ROLL TUMBLEWEED đŸ€ đŸŽ™ïž Here’s a song I’ve always been a huge fan of and it seems to me Nicholas Brodszky and Sammy Cahn had a great country streak in ‘56 with this and “The Gal with the Yaller Shoes” from the Oscar-nominated Meet Me in Las Vegas which premiered on March 9 earlier that year. These two goats outdid themselves with this movie also yielding the amazing title song as well as June Allyson’s showstopping “Now, Baby, Now!”, proving Eleanor Geisman was no longer the girl next door type but now a sensual leading lady. Along with June we get Joan Collins as Crystal, Dolores Gray as Sylvia, Ann Sheridan as Amanda, Ann Miller as Gloria, Agnes Moorehead as the Countess, Joan Blondell as Edith, Charlotte Greenwood as Lucy and Carolyn Jones as Pat in a terrific musical remake of George Cukor’s The Women. Ironically enough, Crystal was played by two of the most legendary Joans in Hollywood royalty (the role was originated by Joan Crawford uttering her iconic “...and, by the way, there’s a name for you, ladies. But it isn’t used in high society, outside of a kennel!”) and you can also hear “My Lucky Charm” from Meet Me in Las Vegas as source music during the closing nightclub climax right around the performance of this banger by Buck Winston (Jeff Richards). Even though Miss Collins made her exit by talking about the more current pollution problems in California, both incarnations of this masterpiece have aged exceptionally well. Enjoy, y’all!!! 🎊đŸŽș WHEN DO I WANT YOU TO CELEBRATE? NOW! BABY, NOW! đŸ«§đŸ€  Today we have a very special brawl as we salute 70 years of David Miller’s THE OPPOSITE SEX! June Allyson, Joan Collins, Dolores Gray, Ann Sheridan and Ann Miller headline along with Leslie Nielsen, Jeff Richards, Agnes Moorehead, Charlotte Greenwood, Joan Blondell and Sam Lavene. We’ve also got guests of honor Harry James, Dick Shawn, Art Mooney and Jim Backus for our added entertainment! Released October 26, 1956, this musical classic originated as Clare Booth’s successful play “The Women” and was immortalized in 1939 by director George Cukor and an entirely female cast of which Ann Morriss was the only member to appear in this remake (gym instructors can always double as salon receptionists!). Producer Joe Pasternak put together a truly amazing cast to breathe new life into the story but the part of Kay Hilliard was considered for Esther Williams as well as Deanna Durbin at different stages and reworked until June Allyson played it to jungle red perfection! There even was a song called “Jungle Red” which did not make it into the final product as a nod to the iconic line of which the conductor’s score still exists. Let’s all get ready to snitch, rock with the tumbleweed, poke our noses into everybody else’s business and (hopefully!) get a steady significant other ‘cause seven decades later we know the answer still is The Opposite Sex!!! @joancollinsdbe @tcm @warnerarchive @amazonmgmstudios @warnerbrosepics #juneallyson #joancollins #annsheridan #annmiller #leslienielsen by @artsmith2001
đŸ„łđŸ‘©đŸŒ Happy 70th to THE OPPOSITE SEX!!! đŸ’…đŸ»đŸŽ‚ Great is your faithfulness but how devastating can faithlessness be!? Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer reworked George Cukor’s 1939 classic “The Women” into a musical yielding an unforgettable romp loaded with amazing comedy, songs and a rollicking cast comprised mostly of blondes, brunettes and a redhead or two. The place is New York City and there’s always something brewing at Sydney’s whenever anybody’s getting their hair or nails done and wealthy wives have the will and way to handle whatever men may have up their sleeves. Sylvia Fowler gets word from Olga the manicurist that her friend Kay is being cheated on by her husband Broadway producer Stephen Hilliard. It doesn’t take long for Mrs. Fowler to meet the very party while having coffee right after a performance of his show. Miss Crystal Allen happens to be a chorus girl whose primary aspiration is fortune hunting. When Kay discovers Crystal hung out with not just Steve but their daughter Debbie, she confronts her and leaves for Reno to get a divorce. There she meets nightclub queen Gloria Dall who happens to be Mr. Fowler’s new love interest. In comes Sylvia to join the divorce rodeo but ropes cowboy Buck Winston and brings him over to New York with hopes of making him a nightclub country singer. Now married, Crystal courts Buck and decides to ditch Steve but the rancher refuses. A most faithful and smart lover, Kay seizes her moment and happily reunites with Steve. June Allyson, Joan Collins, Dolores Gray, Ann Sheridan, Ann Miller, Leslie Nielsen, Jeff Richards, Agnes Moorehead, Charlotte Greenwood, Joan Blondell and Sam Levene star and also on hand are special guests Harry James, Art Mooney, Dick Shawn and Jim Backus. Scripted by Fay and Michael Kanin and scored by Georgie Stoll with songs by Sammy Cahn and Nicholas Brodszky, producer Joe Pasternak appointed David Miller as director and the world got to see the bare facts about The Opposite Sex on October 26, 1956. 70 years later we still know every single one of them! @joancollinsdbe @tcm @warnerarchive @amazonmgmstudios @warnerbrosepics #juneallyson #joancollins #annsheridan #annmiller #leslienielsen by @artsmith2001
đŸŒŸđŸ‘đŸ» Unboxing Max Steiner’s soundtrack to William A. Wellman’s iconic masterpiece A STAR IS BORN!!! đŸ§łđŸŽ„ From Screen Archives Entertainment comes the very first issue of this legendary score in a comprehensive edition containing several alternate versions of Steiner’s cues that were replaced upon director Wellman’s request as well as a number of outtakes. The tale of young Esther Blodgett making it big as a movie star while her husband Norman Maine’s luster and life decline due to his drinking problems has been remade three times but Janet Gaynor and Fredric March were, are and will always be the living epitome of these iconic personages. Sourced from Steiner’s personal acetate collection at Brigham Young University’s film music archive, this amazing release is courtesy of my friend Ray Faiola who also wrote its liner notes prefaced by Steven C. Smith (who has a swell new book chronicling Bernard Hermann’s longtime association with director Alfred Hitchcock). It took 88 years for the world to be able to hear this score but good things always come to those who wait. This amazing music is most definitely the sound of the one and only MRS. NORMAN MAINE!!! @warnerbros @warnerbrosentertainment @warnerarchive @warnerbrosepics @tcm @theacademy @watertowermusic #astarisborn #maxsteiner #soundtrack #unboxing #fyp by @artsmith2001
đŸŽĄđŸ˜‚đŸ«˜ STRIKIN’ OIL IS EASIER THAN SPITTIN’ HERE IN TEXAS!!! đŸ’•đŸ’”đŸ„ł Hey y’all, I can’t believe I met my Danny Boy (I still like calling Cornie that!) and my bestie Debbie this long ago! We who are born and bred right here in this gorgeous state of Texas sure lose track of time but you bet your money, child, these memories are all rad or, I’d personally say, dynamite! I just can’t stop scrolling trying to get into whatever all my friends are doing. I’m from Texas and I know it and Slim sure knows how to choose ‘em. We’re all still pitching it and my Danny, I mean, Cornie is the carnival king. All that dough trouble he got into by eating the Jelly Bellies is far gone and all I have to cling to are my pappy’s oil wells ‘cause my Cornie is mine for keeps! Gotta mosey now but the Gaytes are throwing the rave to end all raves at the Comanche tonight so I’d better not be late. Esther Williams, Red Skelton, Howard Keel and Ann Miller star in this syncopated, fun-loaded, chuck wagon racing tale about two carnival hopefuls finding true love upon passing off as a wealthy cattle baron and his sister. Its classic songs are courtesy of the legendary Harry Warren and Dorothy Fields and adding to the fun are Paula Raymond, Kennan Wynn (in a hilarious tour-de-force performance as Dan Sabinas!), Tom Tully, Hans Conried, Thurston Hall, Marjorie Wood, and special guest stars Red Norvo and Foy Willing. Here’s to 75 rollicking years of ridin’, swimmin’, toe-tappin’ and laughin’ fun; step up and pitch it any way you choose, I got a buck that says you’ll loose! #texascarnival @tcm @warnerarchive @amazonmgmstudios @warnerbrosepics @redskeltonmuseum @harrywarrenentertainment #estherwilliams #redskelton #howardkeel #annmiller by @artsmith2001
