🥹🎶 SMILIN' THROUGH 🎉🙏🏻
Today we celebrate eight and a half decades of Frank Borzage's Technicolor masterpiece starring Jeanette MacDonald, Brian Aherne and Gene Raymond. A musical remake of Jane Murfin and Jane Cowl's 1919 play, this third and final film iteration was an all-stop pulling production for producer Victor Saville and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
This beautiful ballad is Moonyean and Sir John's premarital waltz before Jeremy Wayne takes the young bride's life due to his fatal jealousy. Already associated with the property's previous screen adaptations, it seemed fitting for Jeanette MacDonald's gorgeous voice and looks to give this selection Tinseltown immortality. Gene Raymond was her husband at the time yet their marriage was practically arranged by mogul Louis B. Mayer whereas Jeanette Anna MacDonald's true love (on and off the screen!) was Nelson Ackerman Eddy. He actually appears as an extra in the wedding sequence.
Let's raise a glass of Port and go hunting for an old house to find the love of our lives in on this eve of October 31, 1941 for her eyes of green will always keep smilin' through!
