Introducing Art Sokoloff @artsokoloff

Art Sokoloff is a London-based multidisciplinary artist.
He completed his MA in Print at the Royal College of Art in 2021 and a BA in Architecture at the Moscow Architectural Institute in 2018.
Some notable shows include: “Tokens” at Feelium Gallery, London; “AAIP” at Burg Giebichenstein, Halle; “London Grads Now.21” at Saatchi Gallery, London; “Perspectives” at CICA Museum, Gimpo; “Dry Floor” at Hoxton 253, London.
Art’s projects investigate and intricately intertwine the themes of instructions and visual patterns, authoritarian aesthetics, urban navigation, and technical drawing. Utilising familiar methods and instruments from architecture training, he draws parallels between events, concepts and contemporary reality, extracting structure-based abstraction, both metaphorical and literal.
His current work is being made around the extended knowledge of paper architecture. Taking on both the role of the architect and the observer, Art is involved in the process of constructing hypothetical scenes and spaces. These scenes are filled with brutal structures that elude direct identification. Stern shapes that present themselves as solid and unbreakable are made of a liquid or uncertain medium that can be washed off or broken, as there is no base for these structures to grip. Windows are opened for the viewer to find nothing but a dead end, as the light casts a shadow on them.

“It Could’ve Held” I–III, 2026
Jesmonite
56x42x2cm

These three reliefs were made specifically for the garden at Shtager Outdoor, taking their scale from the existing paving. Their arrangement follows the modular grid of the garden while subtly disrupting it, introducing a parallel system of repeated forms. The placement was determined through spending time in the garden and observing its existing rhythms, proportions and paths.

Sitting close to the ground, the reliefs occupy an uncertain position between object and drawing, between a three-dimensional intervention and a continuation of the paving’s graphic structure. The individual elements are cast separately, allowing each tile to remain slightly distinct within the larger composition. The tiled field is further interrupted by blank tiles, irregular alignments and several elements extending beyond the intended perimeter of the arrangement.

The arrangement begins to suggest a pathway rather than a linear grid: it follows the logic of the existing paving while gradually deviating from it. The garden itself becomes another variable in the work - its uneven surfaces, vegetation, changing light and accumulated traces continually altering the relationship between the reliefs and the ground.

Art Sokoloff: AS THOUGH IT HAD ALWAYS EXISTED.
Curated by Olga Klimovitskaya

A line stops being the trace of a hand and begins to function as an edge. A mark stops being material and begins to read as light. Art Sokoloff pushes his means to the limit of what is necessary — the point at which a form either convinces, or does not.
For the first time, outdoors, in the garden at Shtager Outdoor, where the artist’s programme meets one he did not write: light, wind, shadow.

Art Sokoloff is a London-based multidisciplinary artist interrogating the friction between architectural memory and forensic materiality.

Drawing from the aesthetics of fictional brutalism and technical drafting, he constructs hypothetical scenes that challenge the permanence of the built environment.

In his current exploration of "paper architecture," @artsokoloff acts as both architect and observer. He renders stern, unbreakable structures in liquid, uncertain media - monuments that elude identification and lack the ground to grip.

His work creates a paradox of scale and stability: windows that open onto dead ends and shadows that reveal the void.
