10 October – 19 December 2026

Each year Artspace Aotearoa sets one question which our exhibitions and events orbit in the company of artists and audiences. Across the year, we explore what this question offers us and what artworks and their authors can weave together. In 2026, we ask “Which history?”

If the Artspace Aotearoa mission is to explore contemporary life, led by artists, it feels timely in a world characterised by tumult and an ever flattening of nuance to look at how we got here and where we see ourselves tomorrow and beyond.

Read the annual question essay by the Kaitohu Director Ruth Buchanan on our website and at the link in our bio.

We are pleased to announce the opening of Group Admits Mistake.

How does a group form? The five Tāmaki Makaurau based artists in this exhibition were invited independently to make new art work as part of this year’s Chartwell Trust New Commissions programme. They have all produced semi-fictional worlds that raise questions about authority, participation, and meaning. This exhibition asks what happens when we find ourselves part of a system we cannot fully understand or control.

This exhibition is presented with the support of our strategic partner the Chartwell Trust.

Exhibition opening on Friday 9 October 6–8pm, all welcome.

More information at the link in our bio and on our website.

MEET THE MAKERS: HAUMI E STUDIOS

At 151 K Road, HAUMI E STUDIOS is making space for creativity, connection and community. This artist-run, pop up gallery space is part of the new wave of creative energy finding a home on Karangahape Road - bringing artists together and making room for fresh ideas, collaboration and expression.

The initiative, a partnership between the Karangahape Road Business Association, @artspace.aotearoa and local property owners, sees artists moving into previously vacant retail spaces to create, collaborate and connect with the community.

Spaces like this are what make K Road special: independent, experimental and full of people doing things their own way. Made possible with support from Auckland Council and the City Centre Targeted Rate, helping bring more creativity into our city.

Join us in welcoming Zach Muir to the team as our Research and Archive Management Assistant.

Zach has been a volunteer at Artspace Aotearoa for several years, and has been involved in the cataloguing of our physical archive to assist it’s transfer to the E.H. McCormick Research Library.

Over the next year, Zach will be helping us organise and develop the Artspace Aotearoa archive, making our historical records, exhibitions, publications and public programmes more accessible. As we look towards 40 years of Artspace Aotearoa in 2027, this work will help us uncover and share more of the organisation’s history.

Zach Muir is an artist living and working in Tāmaki Makaurau. His current practice focuses on printmaking and publications, with an interest in what reproduction and archiving practices can and have looked like for queer communities.

Lolani Dalosa is one of the five Chartwell Trust New Commissions artists preparing for the exhibition Group Admits Mistake, opening soon.

Lolani is a Samoan and Filipino artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Using CCTV material, online imagery, industrial and readymade objects, he produces films, sculptures, photographs and installations that draw on from urban life in South Auckland. These constitute an ongoing study of ambivalence, examining the underlying determinants of choice, engagement and participation within everyday structures and systems.

This is the last week to see our current exhibition CRIT: Art learning since 1987.
Bridget Riggir-Cuddy Kaiwhakahaere Tuarua Deputy Director reflects:

“As CRIT: Art learning since 1987 closes, I have been thinking about what happened when people entered it. Conversations with students were especially revealing. They connected the works to their own experiences of teachers, institutions and informal communities that sustained their practices.

A highlight was Atarangi Anderson’s wānanga style Deep dive, which invited audiences to become active learners as knowledge unfolded through kōrero, whakapapa, observation and exchange. Her presentation made learning tangible as a relationship and responsibility carried between people and generations.

CRIT leaves me hopeful that art learning is not owned by institutions, but made through encounter.”
