Sometimes, we think if we could only gather enough courage, pull the scattered threads of our lives together, and weave them into something beautiful—like a podcast, an exhibition, a book, a piece of art—we’ll reach a nice, neat, final resolution. A season finale, so to speak. We anticipate a satisfying click, like a key turning in a lock. Some matter-of-fact signal that the past is settled. That the grief is, once and for all, put to bed.

As Season 2 of ArtStorming: The Art of Remembrance came to a close, ArtBridge Executive Director and ArtStorming host Lili Pierrepont found herself standing at that very threshold.

The births of paintings, poems, essays, and songs can seem like the dawn of creation, like dips into the void that bring something entirely new into the light. Family and Systemic Constellation work, though, unfolds in a less something-out-of-nothing sort of way. Because before anyone ever stares down a blank canvas or an empty page, human beings are already moving inside an inheritance we usually don’t have the vocabulary to name.

While the notion of a blank slate, a self-made artist, an independent seeker arriving unburdened to write an original story is romantic, the reality is dustier.

The Karma Cab was an Indian taxi, decorated with vivid lettering. BC Smith drove it through Santa Fe because he was new to town and needed a way to get to the grocery store.

Of course, in the land of Subarus, vintage pickups, and Teslas, whenever he pulled up to pump gas, strangers would stare, and Smith would apologize, “It’s not my car; it’s just on loan from a film set.”

But people weren’t looking for an apology. They wanted to know what kind of magic had just rolled down Cerrillos Road. They wanted a ride.

And as it turns out, the guy driving the Karma Cab was building something even more mysterious, magical, and strange in the shadows.

Smith inside Phasmagorica, an immersive seance experiment where 13 guests gather around a table, choose trigger items, and step into a carefully designed mystery that lives in the liminal space between belief and disbelief. No mediums, no holograms, no cheap scares. The unsettling part is how personal it can feel.
