As an ESL (English as a Second Language) student in Year 6, many lunchtimes were spent with a couple of friends nestled in the aisles of the library. As a child, the lack of company always drew me to books as a source of comfort, a bridge to new vistas and an endless well of new ideas.

Books can act as anchors, pillars or mirrors for the soul. They help lift our anchored thoughts and allow us to navigate silently, but freely; through precarious paths armed with newfound chances to break boundaries.

Books present us with challenging new discoveries about ourselves, the world and beyond; allowing us to connect with the inner thoughts and creative nectars of a person of a different place and time. They act as pillars that strengthen our capacity to expand our knowledge, annex our skill and express our identity. Finally, good books can transport our minds’ eyes to gaze at different reflections of the world and of ourselves.

And that’s why I love books.

What’s your favourite book?

A massive thank you to #blacktownarts and #blacktowncitycouncil for this amazing opportunity for so many #localartist like myself. I’ve lived in Blacktown for 25years and the wealth of culture and the celebration of our multicultural city makes this town, the heart and soul of Western Sydney.

What a Lifetime of Chasing Creativity Has Taught Me

1. How to solve problems : you can never know the end result before you begin, you’ll surely f things up, things won’t go according to plan, self-doubt will periodically creep in and in despair you’ll ask : “Why did I do this?”. Then you get your second wind or an unlikely solution shows up to help you plod along.

2. Have a curious mind and an open heart.
The best skill to develop is the hunger and the eagerness to learn : be the fool, be the wobbly toddler, be the clueless novice. Learn with flare, learn with grit and learn with the faith that though your (eclectic set of nunchuck interpretive dance) skills may not produce money or fame, the range of little abilities you acquire are housed in your spirit and tantamount to living a full life.

3. Create to satiate your inner child and build to satisfy your older self. Your life is your own creative project! Fill it with self-defined purpose that aligns with your values, look at different people, places, cultures, genres for inspiration and connection. Make peace with yourself, your flaws, your foibles and find ways to see life with honest reflection.

Oh yeah, I made an “Utilitarian Art Installation” on a grassy knoll in our backyard : it’s a bench 😁

Here to collect my Internet Merit Award 🏆⭐️🎉

Community, Creativity and Charm celebrated at the Mary Poppins Festival 2026 in the beautiful heritage city of Maryborough.

If you’ve ever read the books or seen the films, Mary Poppins has been a phenomenon for decades. The writer of the books, P.L. Travers was born 1899 in a bank building where her father worked, the same building has been restored as a museum. This lovely little city is celebrated as one of the oldest colonial settlements in Australia.

If you ever travel past Brisbane and make your way up the sunny state, don’t forget to stop by Maryborough, it’s one of the most beautiful, charming cities in Australia.

It’s a beautiful thing when a vintage classic meets another vintage classic 😁💛 He told me he’s “fact checking The Simpsons!” 🤣

I stopped watching The Simpsons in the early 2000’s and the movie in the mid 2000’s was a nice bookend to the show. I credit the Simpsons for introducing me to the fantastical world of Edgar Alan Poe! Now rewatching and seeing my kid enjoy it gives me joy and nostalgia! 💛😊

1996 First Day attending an Australian school, I was terrified.

I had learned how to cook bolognaise pasta (Mum said I needed to learn not to have breakfast, lunch & dinner just with rice.) “When in Rome!” she would say… Little did I know, that was her attempt at helping me smoothly assimilate to Australian culture.

The lunch pasta in that cute little lunch bag was quite cheesy, it had a bubbling energy that my tiny Filipino tummy couldn’t handle. And after the school bell rang, as I sat in a bus stop line with my new classmates, a girl in my class exclaimed “Eww! Did you FART?!” 💨 I honestly had never heard of the word in my entire freshy life, so I vehemently shook my head & cried to my Mum after school. She soon instructed me to be really capable in English so no one would mess with me.

It’s been exactly 30 years since this photo was taken.
I now tutor Australian High School students Standard, Advanced and Extension English to help them prepare for selective school entry and HSC.

I still get asked “Are you from Canada?” Because of my muddled Aussie accent. I don’t know if I’ve fully integrated myself into Australian society.

My son celebrates 4 cultures : Filipino 🇵🇭, Colombian🇨🇴, English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and Australian 🇦🇺. He has a “YouTube accent” much like a lot of Aussie kids today thanks to the internet, he is also learning to speak 2 languages other than English.

Australia is an incredible country. It’s filled with so many wonderful people who value diversity.
I don’t normally have political opinions posted online, I really try to avoid it, but recent talks about “monoculturalism” has really made me think about what Australia means to me.

Australia has given my Mum and I an amazing life with wonderful opportunities, a wide &expanded sense of community outside of our own Filipino culture. I’ve grown up in Blacktown; one of Australia’s most multicultural cities. Everything I know & have, I owe it to living in this amazing place where people can come from any background as long as they support the core values of the society - that’s the magic of being in a multicultural society.

PS. Jackie, it was me. I did FART. I’m sorry. by @artsymamabee

Multiculturalism is not utopia, but it’s an abundant fertile place for people to truly grow. Everyone has something to contribute. Fault, responsibility and collective solution is overall, a burden we must carry and sort out together. Not through enforced conformity, but through our diverse strengths. by @artsymamabee
