From software engineering to game design at Blizzard 🎮

Meet Hua Yan, an MFA Game Design student from the Academy of Art University’s School of Game Development, who landed a Game Designer internship at Blizzard Entertainment!

In this interview, Hua shares his journey from earning a Computer Science degree and working as a software engineer to pursuing his passion for game design. He talks about his experience at @blizzard , the challenges and lessons along the way, and why he chose ArtU to help take the next step toward his career goals.

🌲 How do you get an entire team to see the same vision?

In Game Studio, students from different disciplines come together to collaborate and build a game as a team. For Cosmic Tails, 2D Art Lead & Producer Dominik Rangel (@domsdoodles ) brought some of his own experiences growing up in Washington into the world and inspiration behind the game.

But having a vision is one thing. Communicating it to a team is another.

Dom shares how mood boards, sketches, and visual references helped him communicate ideas more effectively and get the team on the same page as Cosmic Tails began taking shape. 🎨🎮

🎓 BFA in Game Development — Concept Art

From reimagining beloved characters to painting atmospheric frozen landscapes, Gyungju Do’s work showcases a versatile approach to concept art across multiple disciplines.

Inspired by Final Fantasy XIV, these modern character redesigns explore how iconic personalities can be translated into contemporary fashion while preserving their unique identities and charm. Alongside them, the New Winter environment paintings demonstrate a strong command of mood, color, and composition, capturing the quiet beauty and harsh atmosphere of a frozen world.

❄️ New Winter 1 was created in GAM 269: Color and Light for Concept Art, focusing on using lighting and color to establish believable environments and mood.

🏔️ New Winter 2 was created in GAM 665: Color & Composition for Game Art, emphasizing visual storytelling through composition, value, and cinematic environment design.

Together, these pieces highlight Gyungju’s ability to move seamlessly between character and environment concept art while creating compelling worlds that invite players to imagine the stories within them.
