What writer influenced you the most? My Occult Detective x Latvian Mythology WIP owes a lot to Jo Nesbø. Writing a good detective plot isn’t easy. To teach myself how to do it, I read the entire Harry Hole series several times, making notes as I went along. #jonesbø #harryhole #writinginspiration #writercommunity #killingmoon by @artvenske

📚🔃 I got one at last! After months of debate, I finally bit the bullet and got myself a remote page-turner for my Kindle Paperwhite. And I’m glad I did! The difference in comfort is night and day. I can put my Kindle anywhere I want and read in virtually any position.

Is it perfect? No. Nothing is. First, there’s no page-back functionality. Second, the clip-on part of the device feels comically large for its function, which is to simulate a finger press through the metal contact pad. And this isn’t just my page-turner. They’re all like this for some reason.

Still, I’m very satisfied with my purchase. The clip-on part attaches securely, and you get used to its bulk quickly. The pros far outweigh the cons. Highly recommended.

QOTD: Have you ever tried using a page-turner device?

✍🏻📚 Just printed out my manuscript. It feels surreal to hold it in my hands. 242 pages. Just over 60,000 words. 8 months of my life. When you write digitally, you never truly grasp how much you’ve written until you see it in physical form.

🐾📚 Do you have any pawed friends who like to keep you company while you read? I personally don’t have any pets, but my relatives do. I’m allergic to cats, but it seems nobody has told their cats about this. One of them inevitably comes over to check out what I’m doing and falls asleep on me. The cat in the photo, Oscar, is often guilty of this. Not that I mind. He’s very chill and fun to hang out with.

I usually don’t do trends, but I found this one quite interesting. I’ve experimented a lot with my Kindle settings over the years. Here are the ones I currently use on my Kindle Paperwhite 6 (2024).
♦️ I really like Bookerly as a font. It’s super legible and suits all genres.
🩸 I keep my font size at 5, which gives me letters that are just a bit bigger than a typical trade paperback.
♥️ I experimented with landscape orientation a few years ago, but reverted to portrait rather quickly.
🔴 I use the thinnest margins to take full advantage of the screen. Justified text alignment looks tidy, so that’s what I use.
🟥 Page turn animations are a contentious issue with avid Kindle users. I think they’re quite fun and don’t find them distracting, so I keep them on.
🛑 As for the general settings, I keep both the brightness and the warmth locked at 12.

QOTD: 🤔 What settings do you use on your Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, or whatever else you use to read ebooks?

📚 What am I currently reading? The Thirst by Jo Nesbø. It’s the eleventh installment in the Harry Hole series. I highly recommend it.

📚🌏 Translated literature. Do you read a lot of translated books? I know I do. In fact, most of the books I read in English weren’t originally written in English. One of the reasons I took learning English seriously in the first place is because more books are translated into this language than any other.

📚 It’s study time. My writing mentor sent me these super helpful handouts during our last session. Hopefully, they’ll help me improve my dialogue writing.

The first week of my writing streak is in the books. My last one lasted 129 days. As you can imagine, the decision to take a day off and start from scratch wasn’t taken lightly. I felt burnout creeping in and decided to nip it in the bud. The new streak is progressing well. The daily writing habit is firmly in place. My current goal is to write on more than 99% of all days this year. This means I can have two more non-writing days. If my next streaks are just as long, the math will add up.

I’ve been working on my novel every single day for the last 123 days. Here’s what I’ve learned:

1️⃣ Building a daily writing habit is the best thing you can do for yourself as a writer. You won’t always feel like writing, but you’ll always feel glad you did. This habit makes progress automatic and makes excuses vanish. It took about 50-60 of daily writing for the habit to stick. I can’t recommend it enough, especially if you’re a slower writer like myself.
2️⃣ Write what you know or care about. Why? A novel can take many months (and sometimes even years) to write. Do you really want to spend all that time writing about a topic that bores you?
3️⃣ Don’t abandon your other hobbies. There will be days when you don’t feel like writing. It’s normal. When that happens, it’s super helpful to have another creative hobby to help you recharge your creative juices. Just clock in your word count goal and focus on your other hobby. It’s a great way to get out of a writing rut.

Do you have any writing tips of your own? Share them in the comments!

②⓪②⑤ was an important year for me. I started working on my novel, built a daily writing habit, and began being mentored by an accomplished author who I respect a lot. I hope to finish this book in 2026 and start querying literary agents. #writing #yearinreview2025 #novelwriter #urbanfantasy #thrillerwriter taken in Riga, Latvia by @artvenske
