Before he bought a mattress in his new Seattle apartment, Aman Mahajan bought a piano. That's the kind of group Soul Jam is. Yash Patel, a Microsoft security engineer who left India in 2015, started it with his wife Arunima Agarwal, an Amazon software engineer who now runs everything from the branding to the stage design. Nikita Singh, a project manager at Lululemon, grew up with a black-and-white poster of Madhubala on her wall and never stopped wondering who the woman behind it actually was, so she wrote the show that finally answered it. Yash Malpathak, trained for years in Hindustani vocal music and tabla, showed up and turned it into something closer to a concert than a lecture. None of them trained for this professionally. All of them work full days in tech first. Their Madhubala show sold out a week before it opened, at a venue that's hosted acts far more seasoned than a group of engineers with a weekend hobby. Aman still has that piano. He still doesn't have a proper bed frame.
