Invitation: Let's Talk Public Space! Spatial Justice with Paul D. Bauknight Jr. on Thursday November 12 on Zoom Dear friends and colleagues, It is our pleasure to invite you to our next conversation about public space. We will have Paul D. Bauknight Jr., President and Founder at The Center for Transformative Urban Design, joining us for a discussion on spatial justice in the city. Hope you will join us! What? Paul, whose work challenges traditional paradigms in urban design, advocating for policies and practices that dismantle inequities and create spaces that foster belonging and opportunity, will introduce concepts of spatial justice and injustice through a conversation centred on three public spaces, a river, a park and a square in Minneapolis: Upper Harbor Terminal, Heritage Park and George Floyd Square. We will then have a collective conversation on the relationship between spatial justice and urban livability. When? Thursday November 12, 2026 from 6 pm to 7 pm in Helsinki, 10 am to 11 am in Minneapolis Where? Online on Zoom. Link in comments and bio. The conversation will be facilitated by Arvind Ramachandran, architect and urban designer based in Helsinki, Finland. The event is a continuation of Arvind's work with public spaces started during the residency at the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York @thefciny and The Cooper Union School of Architecture @schoolofarchitecture in fall 2025, which is currently supported by the Greta and William Lehtinen foundation @gwlfoundation. The event does not require prior registration and is open to anyone interested in public spaces. Please do share the invite in your networks. Looking forward to conversing with you! by @arvindrchn
Wanna tell a story, recite a poem, sing a song or share something else during UrbanApa x Stoa 2026? 🎤 Come join us at PoC Open Mic to sing, joke, recite and rant away at the first open mic created by people of the Global majority for people of the global majority! All are welcome to spectate and enjoy. Tania Nathan and Arvind Ramachandran host the event and perform shortly. Tania and Arvind are the power duo behind PoC open mic concept. They are followed by Ezgi June and Shaghayegh Ansari, and after that, the stage is open for anyone! 📅 PoC open mic on Wednesday 26th August at 18:30 Ezgi June is an amateur musician from Türkiye that performs covers of Turkish folk and pop songs. Though she considers herself mainly a singer than a guitarist, she picked up the guitar later in her musical journey to be able to accompany her own singing. It is important to Ezgi June that her music invokes deep feelings (both for her and for her audience) and her sets are filled with soft songs carefully chosen to offer a sneak peek into her inner world. Shaghayegh Ansari is an Iranian interdisciplinary artist based in Helsinki. Her practice is rooted in performance art and explores social and political realities through intimate and personal forms of storytelling. She often draws on archives, everyday memories, and small-scale narratives related to displacement, and migration, using them as a way to approach larger collective experiences. 📸 Photo of Ezgi June: Viktor Ijäs 📸 Photo of Shaghayegh Ansari: Tangmo Tualek by @arvindrchn
Thank you Detroit for a great International Placemaking Week 2026! It was wonderful to see intentional and coordinated action by public, private and philanthropy sector operators, who listen to what people actually want for their neighbourhoods and city, turning almost impossibly difficult urban challenges around. It was also a true privilege to be able to exchange ideas with old friends as well as new, while keeping up to date about the exciting work being done in the US and across the world around community based public space design. Thank you @pps_placemaking , @downtowndet , @placemakingx and everyone else behind making this edition a grand success. Can't wait to continue the global conversation around making places for people! by @arvindrchn

As my residency in New York City hosted by @thefciny and The Cooper Union @schoolofarchitecture comes to an end, I would like to express my gratitude to the wonderful people at both institutions, as well as numerous colleagues, practitioners, academics, teachers, researchers, activists, organisers and regular New Yorkers who were incredibly generous with their time and expertise over the last three months. Thank you! I have had a memorable time in this diverse city, and can attest that New Yorkers love their public spaces, and are ready to go to any length to ensure neighbourhood places remain crucial platforms for civic life. Based on conversations I had with over 45 locals and visits to over 130 public spaces during the residency, I started work on a field kit for public space imagination, a tool I hope will make conversations around public spaces welcoming, inclusive, collaborative and fun. More details about this kit, our placemaking work at the City of Helsinki, and my investigations in New York this autumn are available from the presentation shared at the final event: cutt.ly/convpublicspaces If you find yourself in New York at some point, and would like to check out some of the public spaces I visited, please feel free to use this map: cutt.ly/NYCpublicspacesAR With these words and pictures from the final event, I head back to Helsinki brimming with ideas, connections and most importantly, hope. Thank you New York, I look forward to meeting you again soon! Pictures 1-3 by @donovanfinn , 4-6 by @ekentnyc , 7-9 by @harriinaraina , 10 by @rockawayjim by @arvindrchn

A few weeks ago we hosted, together with @finlandnewyork, ’𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 – 𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶, 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱’ at the Consulate General of Finland in New York, facilitated by our Architect-in-Residence Arvind Ramachandran (@arvindrchn) together with Ethan Kent (@ekentnyc), Executive Director of @placemakingx 💫 Arvind and Ethan led a thoughtful dialogue on how the collective shaping of small-scale public spaces can strengthen belonging, empower underrepresented communities, and help cities better support residents in improving shared environments. They shared inspiring examples from Helsinki, New York, and beyond, inviting everyone to join in whatever way felt right. The event was part of @archtober 2025!✨ 📸: 1-4. @emmatermonen & 5. @idairenee by @arvindrchn
