Another great day out on the Thames! 🛶

Putting this out there for a bit of accountability…

We’re taking on the 2027 Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon!

Known as The Canoeist’s Everest, it’s 125 miles, 77 portages and one of the biggest paddling challenges in the world.

A serious challenge ahead, but plenty of time on the water between now and then. Looking forward to it! taken in Battersea Power Station by @asa.active

A month ago I took a pretty nasty fall climbing outdoors. Physically, I got off lightly with two sprained ankles but I was not far from the ground at all. On the day I tried to climb again, physically I couldn’t. What I hadn’t quite appreciated the effect it had had on my confidence.

So last night, part of the training was simply falling.

Small ones. Bigger ones. Again and again.

We train strength, fitness, technique and mobility, but the psychological and emotional side needs training too.

Confidence is a bit like a muscle — if you want it to grow, you have to give it something to overcome.

Still a work in progress. 🧗

🏴‍☠️ Glory to the KLC 🛶

We started this club in November last year. Not even a year old yet and somehow this motley crew of buccaneers, vagabonds and river rats has already managed three expeditions and countless paddles up and down the Thames.

We’ve paddled through wind, rain, ice, snow and sunshine. Gone undercover at other clubs to hijack their pool sessions. Capsized — sometimes deliberately, sometimes considerably less so. Been blown off course and crash-landed on beaches. Jumped off piers and cliffs. Paddled alongside seals and dolphins. And, naturally, enjoyed a generous handful of nights out along the way.

Friends of friends have become friends. What started as a few lads going paddling has somehow become a proper little club.

And now the boys have circumnavigated the Isle of Wight. 🌊

I wasn’t there for this one, which strangely makes me even prouder of it. A club eventually takes on a life of its own. You start it, build it, turn up week after week, get cold and wet together — and somewhere along the way it becomes something that exists beyond any one of you.

KLC is breathing, functioning and doing exactly what we created it to do.

Love this group of lads.

Course Landaise 🇫🇷🐂

Warning: no animals were harmed during the Course Landaise. Two humans were, though, so that’s fine.

Watching the Course Landaise has been on my bucket list forever — mainly to see the sauteurs and écarteurs do their thing. I’d sadly missed the Fêtes de Dax thanks to an easyJet delay, so I found a small village version instead and set off by train, bus and foot. About three hours travelling in total just to get there.

I was the only foreigner, which was good for my French practice.

What I hadn’t realised was that the audience would get the chance to enter the ring themselves. When the commentator first called for volunteers I wasn’t entirely sure what was going on, so I missed the first round of games.

I sat there afterwards feeling the familiar pangs of cowardice I always get when I pass up an opportunity like that.

So I was both relieved and slightly nervous when I realised there was going to be a second round.

Before my mind really knew what I was doing, my feet had carried me over the fence and into the ring.

First game: try to pop a balloon attached to the bull’s horns. Close, but no cigar.

Second game: get the bull to chase you through a hula hoop.

This was much more to my taste.

Two close encounters. Two goals.

During the same game one of the other players got absolutely slammed by the bull. He’s alive, although possibly not very well for a while.

Glad I did it. 🐂 by @asa.active

A good day in the sea for a great cause. 🌊❤️

Yesterday my sister and I completed the Bournemouth Pier to Pier Swim in support of @the_bhf

A couple of years ago she became paralysed and was using a wheelchair. A few years down the line and I signed us both up for this event as a long-term goal to help her get back in the pool and refocus on her health. Since then she’s spent countless hours in the pool, one session at a time.

Yesterday we swam from pier to pier together!! If I’m being honest at times it was a challenge for me to keep up with her.

Seeing how far she’s come made this one far more memorable than any finishing time… although we’ve already decided we’re going to smash our time next year. 💪

In the meantime, the plan is plenty more wild swimming.

Thanks to everyone who organised such a brilliant event, and to everyone who took part and supported such an important cause. taken in Bournemouth Pier by @asa.active

Summer Solstice at Stonehenge. ☀️

A real bucket-list experience for me, made even better by being able to share it with my family.

We were lucky enough to get a fantastic view of the sun rising through the sarsen stones—something I’ve wanted to see for years. Standing among a monument that has witnessed thousands of solstices was a pretty special way to start the day.

Definitely worth the early alarm clock.

Hi everyone, I’m still alive.

What a weekend we had — great weather and a relatively calm sea, which made a welcome change from the Isle of Wight trip before this one.

We paddled from Kimmeridge Bay to Durdle Door, then back east to a hidden beach beneath the cliffs to camp for the night.

Swims around the arch, yoga on the beach, whiskey by the fire and dancing beneath the stars before a pilgrimage to St Aldhelm’s Chapel the next morning.
