A lot happened that night at the Centre Pompidou of Paris...
Amongst them : experimental food, playful methodologies, postapocalyptic skin care, soft explosions, rock and tree licking, electrochoc readings and active participation of visitors all within a radical austerity in the means of production.

With Stevie Ango @steviedeuxmerde , Barb Lefebvre @tiptooepoet , Maxence Obein @phum.er , & Ash Périer.
Supported by The Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles/Paris and part of the Extra! Le festival de la littérature vivante. Beaubourg, Paris. 13.09.2024

Certains éléments performatifs pourraient déranger un public non averti.

𝑴𝒖𝒓𝒎𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 is a situated, transdisciplinary research project exploring how art and science can work together to care for underwater kelp forests. And it starts from a position of listening.

Kelp forests line a third of the world’s coastlines and sustain millions of people : filtering water, storing carbon, producing an important part of the oxygen we breathe, sheltering entire ecosystems. But 40 to 60% of them have already disappeared, and most people have never heard the word “kelp”. That’s the stake at the heart of this research : learning to listen to an ecosystem most of us don’t know is vanishing and that we depend on.

In February 2025, we traveled to Sydney in Australia, to meet marine conservation scientist Aaron Eger and @kelpforestalliance , an NGO dedicated to kelp forest conservation worldwide with whom we started a long-term collaboration. For this fieldwork we focused on the Malabar kelp forest, a site the Alliance is working to restore.

For this fieldwork we conceptualised and @phum.er hand-built two listening devices, two prototypes of hydrophones adapted specifically to this underwater environment so we could record the soundscape of the forest — the murmurs of its inhabitants that are usually inaccessible with precision to human ears.

These recordings now feed two things : a spatialized sound art piece (you’ll see later hihi…) that allows people hear the forest, and bioacoustic data potentially exploitable for the Alliance’s monitoring work.

Next, we want to test a hypothesis based from marine biologist Tim Gordon’s coral reef research : playing the sound of a healthy reef into a degraded one measurably brought fish back within weeks. Could the same be possible for a damaged kelp forest?

And beyond the underwater ecosystem itself, how do we also take care of the human communities tied to these forests : indigenous knowledge holders, local users, scientists working to preserve them — building friendships and negotiating alliances as we go? This research keeps transforming itself as it moves forward and is a work in progress I’m happy to finally share snapshots of •.•• ((the original sound of our recordings is coming soooon)) taken in Sydney by @ash.perier

𝑀𝑢𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛, in collab w @phum.er , june 2025. Installation emerging from a field research done in Syndey with scientists from Kelp Forest Alliance (KFA) a few months before, focused on the underwater kelp forest of Malabar. The idea was to create a multisensory installation that engages sight, sound, smell, and touch—and that is capable of conveying what was experienced underwater in Malabar bridging art and science studies. This shows a glimpse of the installation.

A large body of water is at the center of the room in a plexiglas tank (2 × 3 m), raised off the ground in which activated pumps generated a gentle current, similar to the natural movements of Malabar Bay. Inside: the shells of dead sea urchins, carried by the currents.

In Sydney and worldwide, sea urchins have become a major threat to kelp forests. One can no longer speak of one without the other. During the exhibition, the algae that was present in the tank, was slowly removed, mirroring the current phenomenon happening worldwide : lush kelp forests progressively become sterile urchin deserts affecting both marine and coastal communities. But we can do something about it : follow the work of @kelpforestalliance . More infos on my website, link in bio taken in Underwater by @ash.perier

Lately I’ve been playing with natural sun light, shadows and algae kelp textures.
This installation showcases a 5 x 1 m airbrushed transparent kelp biomaterial made on measure to a window, using the sun light to push trough the glowing colours in the room. It can be adapted to any shape of window..•.

Perks of my field experience in wildlife conservation. Assistance accouchement d'une tortue olive ridley (protection des œufs), howler's howling (sound on) , biscottina qui défonce une termitière, embouteillage dans la jungle et un bébé picatchu.

Extracts from a longer video of the performance 'MUE/Depollution'. A floating creature made out of hair harvested through a residency @recyclartbxl where human-animals, dogs, horses and rabbits participated... As a natural bioabsorbant, hair has the capacity to filter the residual petrol floating as a deadly rainbow at the surface of some lakes in Brussels. This was a collective and reparative swim.
