For almost two years, I’ve had the opportunity to serve as one of the directors at one of the seven mental health hospitals within our state government, working with individuals who were NGRI (Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity) and UST (Unfit to Stand Trial).

As a clinician and one of the directors within that system, I gained a deeper understanding of serious mental illness, leadership, and the systems surrounding mental health care.

I saw what felt like the end of many people’s mental health journeys.

And a significant portion of this population was Black and Brown.

If that’s the end for many, what would life look like if there was a different start?

More prevention.
More education.
More community.
More support before crisis.

And that thinking became Guided Rise. 🌱
