Mini watercolour painting of an embedded fossil of a member of Elonichthyidae, a family of extinct prehistoric ray-finned bony fish. The specimen this is based off of was found in Friedrichsroda, Thuringia, Germany, and is currently at @romtoronto
in the Dawn of Life exhibit.

"Our metrics of economic value like GDP count only monetary value in the marketplace, of that which can be bought and sold. There is no room in these equations for the economic value of clean air and carbon sequestration and the ineffable riches of a forest filled with birdsong. Where is the value of a butterfly whose species has prospered for millennia and lives nowhere else on the planet? There is no formula complex enough to hold the birthplace of stories."
-Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer

Showing here my final drawing and initial sketchbook sketch for curiosity (second slide).
I highly recommend this book.

#natureart #art A drawing featuring a quote from Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I was commissioned to draw this as a gift for someone. It was a lot of fun to draw the pup's wrinkles and folds, and then I went overboard with the bookshelf. :P

Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) painted on a mini canvas with acrylics.

This is a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird, who usually lack the ruby throat they're commonly named after which can be confusing. Many bird species are known by features found on the often flashier breeding plumage of male birds, who get more attention and are more readily identified and more often studied, leaving knowledge gaps that are important to fill for conservation. It helps to get to know these birds in their different forms.
