A CHILD CAN BE KNOWN TO EVERY SERVICE.
AND STILL BE PROTECTED BY NONE.

That is the gap that should horrify us.

A school sees one warning. Police hold another piece. Health services have another concern.

But who sees the whole child—and who acts?

In this interview, social worker Deborah challenges agencies failing to work together. I’ve challenged safeguarding failures from outside the system. Here is someone with experience inside it raising the same concern.

So why are we still asking the same question?

After a child dies, we ask who knew what.
We need those answers while that child can still be saved.

Children cannot survive on the promise that “lessons will be learned”. They need adults to share concerns, take responsibility and act.

“What made you do this personally?”

Because I know what it means to fight to be heard. I know grief. And I know how much it matters to have someone standing beside you when you’re challenging people with power.

I wanted to help Preston’s family’s voices be heard. Their love for him—and their determination to get answers—deserve to be listened to.

Preston deserved a future. The children here today deserve protection we can trust.

That is why I speak. That is why I keep going.

Why should families have to reach breaking point before support arrives?

In this conversation, Deborah described the cost of keeping children in care. I raised the case for properly funding relatives who could safely care for them.

Supporting safe family care can preserve a child’s relationships and stability. The financial argument deserves scrutiny too—but the child must always come first.

Through Speak For Them, we’re calling for a national, non-means-tested allowance for kinship carers. Love should be backed by practical support.

Families deserve to be heard before decisions change a child’s life forever.

Deborah spoke from her experience as a social worker. I spoke about Preston’s family and the help they had asked for. We agreed on so much.

What I respected was her willingness to challenge decisions and ask difficult questions. That is what children need from the people trusted to protect them.

Listening to families, properly considering safe family care and providing support must be central to safeguarding.

This is part of what we’re fighting for through Speak For Them, in Preston Davey’s memory. 💙

I’ve challenged failures in social services. A former social worker joined the conversation—and we agreed on so much.

Deborah’s words deserve to be heard:
“You don’t just carry on because this is about child protection.”

I have enormous respect for the approach she described: asking difficult questions, challenging decisions and putting the child first. That is the standard every child deserves.

Respecting professionals who speak up goes hand in hand with demanding accountability when children are failed.
