POSTS STORIES REELS
This month’s speakers are usually the ones telling everyone else’s stories. This month, we’re turning the tables on them! Join us for a conversation with two of Asheville’s most beloved chroniclers of local life, Jason Sandford and Jay Moye, as we explore what it means to document and help create a community through journalism and storytelling. For decades, Jason and Jay have helped shape, celebrate, and question the stories we tell about Asheville and Western North Carolina. Now we’re inviting them to share a little more of their own stories and reflect on how creatives can help a community see itself from new perspectives. It’s all inspired by October’s global theme: ALTITUDE, chosen by the CreativeMornings chapter in Toowoomba, Australia. 🎟️ FREE registration opens Monday, October 26 at 11am! 📍 @thegreyeagle 📅 Friday, October 30 ☕  Doors open at 8:30AM & our program begins at 9AM Bring a friend! We’d love to see you. Meet our speakers! ➡️ Jason Sandford is an Asheville-based journalist who has spent more than three decades covering the people, politics and culture of Western North Carolina and around the world. A former newspaper reporter, he founded Ashvegas.com as an early independent local-news blog and now writes the Ashevegas Hot Sheet on Substack. Early in his newspaper career, Jason worked in small eastern NC towns, documenting the growth of massive industrial hog farms, daring rescues at sea by U.S. Coast Guard swimmers and rural farmers doing the work of growing peanuts, cotton and tobacco. (Yes, tobacco.) His work combines original reporting, news analysis and a deep knowledge of Asheville and the surrounding region. @ashevegas Jay Moye is an Asheville-based writer, curator, and arts journalist.  From 2012-2020, he served as global editor-in-chief of The Coca-Cola Company’s pioneering digital magazine and owned media channel before restarting his independent consultancy to serve a diverse portfolio of corporate and nonprofit clients. His work has appeared in publications such as The Bitter Southerner, Salvation South, Asheville Stages, Aquarium Drunkard, and Paste, and he regularly publishes interviews, essays, and poetry on his Substack. by @ashevegas
SLAVA I finally got into the brand new Ukrainian restaurant on Wall Street called @slavaasheville. I got a giant stack of deruny (potato pancakes) with mushroom gravy, carrot slaw, fresh cucumber slices, and sour cream, and it was totally awesome! I hoovered this food down like the family dog got on the dining room table. Woof woof woof woof. I was sitting with Paddy Riels from @ashevillefoodtours Tours and Jason Sandford from @ashevegas at the time, and when I stopped briefly in between bites to breath and express to my table mates that it was "real good," Jason noted that my fork had not stopped moving from the plate to my mouth since the food arrived. At that point I looked up just long enough to offer them each an opportunity to try some, which they both declined, so I dove back in. Good lord. I ate every scrap, and if not for the rules of society I would have licked the plate clean. This could be my new go-to dish. I highly recommend it. #asheville #wnc #food #ukraine #ukranianfood by @ashevegas

🌙🌒✨The Ballast + The Summer You Learned To Swim are both out today, streaming everywhere you listen to music! 💫Along with the full video of this sweet peek at tracking The Ballast live at @echomountainrecording by David Saich @fiascoroad of @fiasco.media (everything is at 🔗in bi-yo♥️) along with a link to lyrics (👋 you’re welcome, Dad, who can’t ever hear them, haha) 🌒After a year of working on this album and a six year stretch of living the achey and wonderful life stitched into these songs, it is a joy to share these two tracks with you and it felt important to share them together. They both tell different parts of a story that’s important to me about motherhood and reclaiming the selves we were before; about losing and finding, becoming, trusting the world with what’s most precious to us, hoping it floats, and what we want to leave behind us when we go. ✨🤍I wrote The Ballast in the final months of my precious mom’s life, with a two year-old daughter at my feet, thinking about the enormity of compassion and good my mother had created here in this lifetime and hoping I could leave even a fraction of that legacy for my own daughter. The song all stemmed from the question I heard loudly in my chest: “Was I worth my weight in love?” which became the last line of the chorus. 🌊The Summer You Learned To Swim is going to get its own post, but it’s perfect for drives on the parkway and your end-of-summer swimming hole dreams. 🤍Huge thanks to the following humans for bringing these songs to life for me: @lilliesyracuse for executive producing, background vox and co-writing Summer Jason Merritt @jedsmerritt for engineering, co-producing, background vocals and some extra electric guitar splash in Summer Chris Rosser @crosser95 for charting, arranging, piano, organ, wurli and keys @riverguerguerian percussion and drums @jakethawolf bass Duane Simpson @simpson.duane acoustic guitar Matt Smith @snoman1477 electric guitar and pedal steel Drayton Aldridge @draytonmakesmusic fiddle Mike Savino @talltalltrees banjo Kenny Harrington @kennyhairytone asst. engineer Jason Richmond @jasonrichmondmix mastering @victorylapmedia for always believing ♥️ by @ashevegas

Asheville City Schools student Simone Johnston, speaking to a meeting of the city school board on Monday, urged the board to keep a middle school and high school orchestra program, one the board had already decided to cut due to budget constraints and low participation. A board motion to keep the orchestra program failed despite an outpouring of public support for it. Video made with @seegovorg video editing tool. by @ashevegas

Trigger warning: This is the moment during Tuesday night’s Asheville City Council meeting when the emergency alert went out for an official tornado warning. City officials stopped their meeting and ordered everyone into a safe space in City Hall until the storm passed. Mayor Esther Manheimer said that as far as she knew, a City Council meeting had never before been interrupted by a tornado warning and advisory to seek safe shelter. 🔉💫The wanting time.🌙 The season of open windows and unruly gardens. Of blackberries smelling like burning sugar in the sun and the sky suddenly heavy with afternoon thunder. For me, this song is a meditation on sustaining long love and the daily challenges, choices and acts of devotion that allow a partnership to endure. How, taken collectively, the mundane moments of doing life together daily become sacred if we choose to keep showing up and turning towards each other, even in the times when it’s salt water instead of wine. ✨’The Wanting Time’ is out now, everywhere you stream music (link in my bi-yo!)✨ 🌕AND I’m over the moon (see what I did there) to announce that the full album ‘Moon & Mother’ will be out everywhere in October with an Asheville release show happening in September (stay tuned for deets!) ✨Huge thanks to David Saich @fiascoroad of @fiasco.media for this beautiful video (more where that came from too!) ✨Stay close, friends, more to come 🌙 . . . . It’s been a little over a month since a massive blaze gutted the building that’s slated to be the new home of the Salvage Station music that was swept away by Helene in 2024. The Salvage Station folks have said they’re still working on their plans to bring back the beloved venue. After floods and fire, we await new foundations in the Asheville River Arts District.
