Erika. Oil on Canvas. Approx 20 x 40 in.
My loves, it’s been so long and I can assure you it’s been worth it. The lessons I have learned over this year will affect me forever. I have stopped putting myself in a box and am painting freely and truly. Beautiful people have been generously modelling and stepping into my story, and I am building a body of work that will be so deeply mine I will be showing it proudly. Until then, I want to share my dearest friend Erika, who so kindly modelled for me, her willing partner taking the photos with my guidance. As thanks, I offered this portrait and sketches. So grateful for you all and keep in touch. #oilpainting

“Touch” III. Oil on card. 9x13” I’m grateful to my dear friend and studio neighbour Mitoshka, who changed her typewriter ribbon to gold. I just had to grab her before she washed her hands so I paint them! For years I’ve worked with gold and it feels so natural to bring it onto the fingertips. Painting it from natural colours was an entirely new challenge, and I felt the pressure as I restricted myself to three hours. taken in Bristol, United Kingdom by @ashfields.art

Somehow I never shared with you the full final scan of this, my dear friend Lorraine, a piece that took me through a journey over a year. Such a powerful tender moment I could paint all over again. by @ashfields.art

Small expressive studies bring me joy. Amber kindly let me photograph their hands years ago and it’s freeing to paint them and let them be beautiful in their simplicity. In fact I’m not going for a true likeness, just a response. Many more to come. by @ashfields.art

A work in progress I’ve put away for a moment. You’re seeing some the left half. This piece is lined up to be an emotional gateway, where I bring a lot of myself into my creations. They’ll sleep until later this year. by @ashfields.art

I’m feeling the glimmers of spring and it reminded me of this yellow cloth, half sheer. 🌞 by @ashfields.art

Lorraine, a dear friend of mine since I photographed her exceptional art exhibition in London, lives in South Africa. We bonded over a kindred taste in aesthetic; she calls me her ‘taste twin’. While exploring portraiture last year I reached out to see if she would let me paint her, as a way to stay connected and document her as she builds a family with her husband. This section of a photo taken by her friend felt powerful, honest and vulnerable in perfect measure. To reflect her personality, I was careful to find a precise background colour. When I showed her, she called it “the wall colour to my soul!” The painting now holds a year of growth for me, as my skills have refined and I have reworked areas. Particularly that cheekbone. Many many weeks on that cheekbone! The piece has been submitted to the National Portrait Gallery competition and will be sent to Lorraine later in the year. by @ashfields.art

#2 of 100

Calcify into
Repose sublime
Fold. Resign.
For your peace of mind
An earthy red
Drink
Or two

Lay immobile
Like a panther, divine
What is mine
But a tender entwine
A sumptuous
Echo
Of you by @ashfields.art
