Skylarking vinyl arrived this week ✨📯🥹 it's been a labour of love and massive learning experience getting this together w @amritadhallu but super proud and real excited to finally receive and share the records and @amokamok's amazing design irl, in perfect timing as the last few days of the exhibition at @artscatalyst approach Alternate version of audio from the exhibition is now available digitally and as a limited edition vinyl (150 copies). So delighted to announce the autumn series of Sound Service Station 🍂 Sound Service Station is a guided listening experience, hosted by @lingasound . Each month, on a Thursday evening, an experienced selector will explore a genre / place / catalogue that is important to them, in a 90 minute deep listening session, with time for your questions. The evening evolves into a DJ set, with space to move / dance / talk / commune. It’s an intimate, low capacity, cosy affair, hosted at @thesystem.venue . Amina interviews Dr Hadiza Kere Abdulrahman, & Hon Commissioner Rakiya Tanko Ayuba Haruna, mni on their upbringing with playing the instrument & how music acts as a way to bring people together, & link us to our heritage. In July, artist Ashley Holmes @ashley____holmes led a collaborative recording and listening workshop within our Climate course’s ’Cultural Practice’ module. Framing sound as a site of memory and connection to place, the workshop drew parallels between unequal land access, environmental frequencies and the bootlegging traditions and circulation of dub music. To contextualise this praxis, Ashley introduced cultural references ranging Horace Andy’s album ’Skylarking’, Pauline Oliveros’ ‘Deep Listening’; Larisa Kingston Mann’s ‘Rude Citizenship’; to Ingrid Pollard’s photography series ‘Pastoral Interludes’ analysing race and representation in the British rural countryside. Participants experimented with field recorders and drawing exercises, making sound maps, and documenting close up and hidden sounds with contact mics: rustling leaves, insects, water movement, rock and moss textures. In an urban ecology like Bethnal Green Nature Reserve where city sounds are always present, field recording became a practice of environmental re-attunement and embodied listening. ______ Ashley Holmes (b. Luton, 1990) is an artist exploring collaborative and experimental approaches to working with sound, performance, publishing and broadcasting. His work critically examines the ways music and sound function as sites of knowledge production, collective memory, and political possibility. Holmes’ recent research investigates how Western norms of ownership and property shape the circulation of music, access to land, and relationships to place, situating these questions within a wider discourse around identity, coloniality, and historical, cultural and social contexts. ______ This year’s ‘Experimental School of Urban Ecologies’ is supported by @citybridgefoundation, @wellcometrust and @kingsioppn. by @ashley____holmes

Hosting a listening session & next episode of my Dub Epistemology audio essay series next week in Sheffield at @spring_tank_studios to coincide with the 64th anniversary of Jamaican independence. Each episode centres a political moment, social event, or time period and mixes records, radio/interview clips, and conversation to think through the social and cultural histories of Black music. The series and past listening events draw on Clyde Woods' concept of Blues Epistemology to explore how music and sound build power and knowledge in ways that often go unrecognised, and applies that thinking to Dub, to Reggae, and the Caribbean/Britain connection. It's the first one of these that I've hosted Sheffield for a while, so excited for this one.
