Be the light.

Several years ago I had to create a personal road map for a leadership class I was taking. I love quotes so I chose this one to serve as my compass.

We have traveled hundreds of miles, carrying only what could be held in our pack.

We have shared joyful moments with total strangers.

We have offered food, smiles, and kindness when we could.

And today, Sunday, October 11th, we will take our final steps into Santiago where we will give thanks in the cathedral for capable bodies, full hearts, and the chance to see the very best of God’s creation. by @ashley_a_nutt

Several weeks ago I was working on a project and hitting several roadblocks. I felt defeated but then realized I was missing a key component…music!

All good things need a soundtrack and so I created my “Keep Fighting” playlist. I recognized that day would not be my only setback so I needed to get ready. I had no idea that playlist would be the very one that propelled me to finish another crazy long day here in Spain.

Here’s the dialogue that came from my playlist….
“I won’t stop believing” because even if I “get knocked down, I’ll get up again.” At the end of the day “nothing’s going to break my stride” because “I was born this way” and “I’m on the edge of glory”. So, I’ll “keep my head up”, “raise your glass” and be “Brave”.

I danced my way into town, singing and feeling lighter than I have in the past several weeks and incredibly grateful. Don’t you love how music can do that? They say RedBull gives you wings, but today, it was all Lady Gaga.

After walking for 13 days and now realizing Santiago is within reach…it most definitely feels like we are on the edge of glory!! 🎤💃🏻🎶 by @ashley_a_nutt

Let’s talk about backpacks. Until this trip, I only ever carried a backpack with a beach towel and a book, and maybe back in ‘88, my favorite Trapper Keeper.

Carrying this pack all day every day for 3 weeks has been…a challenge. But here’s the thing, I could’ve sent it forward each night and just carried a day pack. Why didn’t I? Because I wanted to prove that I could do it. Prove to who?!?

How often do you carry something that you really should just set down? How often do you set it down, just to pick it back up again because you think you have to or you need to prove something?

Part of this pilgrimage is learning yourself, your limits, and how to recognize what is yours to carry and what isn’t. At times, it’s as simple as, “No, you don’t need to carry another shirt in your bag” but other times it’s “No, you don’t need to carry that bag of guilt/regret/resentment/expectation/etc.”

Many of you have followed this journey, and so as I examine what I want to leave behind here, I encourage you to do the same. What can you set down? How can you lighten your load so the real work, the work of loving life, can begin? by @ashley_a_nutt

Not smart enough
Not brave enough
Not adventurous enough
Not talented enough
Not capable enough….

Not feeling enough is something I think many of us face (atleast I hope it’s not just me 🥴). But 11 days in to this pilgrimage, I have learned there is just no such thing.

There is no one type on the Camino and I saw this day more than ever.
ALL ages
ALL abilities
ALL shapes and sizes
ALL backgrounds
ALL nationalities
ALL love ❤️

You can be anything on the Camino and I love that! Walk 500k or walk 100k - you’re still welcome here. Walk with your pack or send it forward - you’re still welcome here. Stay in albergues or nice hotels - you’re still welcome here. Walk the hilly Camino Frances or the flatter Camino Portuguese - you’re still welcome here.

And isn’t that what Jesus preached? Come one and all - you are welcome here just as you are. You are already enough. ❤️ by @ashley_a_nutt

As in life, there are highs and lows, alegrías y bajones, and yesterday…well it was just kinda blah. No sunshine, no trail friends, no quaint little cafe stops, just one foot in front of the other. I kept telling myself “Vamos, ponte la pilas” (let’s go, pep up - literally, put your batteries in) but my batteries were dead. And since I seem to be solar powered, there wasn’t a charge to be had.

Success on the trail looks different each day. Today’s success was making it to our resting spot without giving up. John didn’t know it, but there were a few times when he was walking ahead that I had my thumb up hitchhiking.
Nobody stopped - jerks.

BUT when we got here, our little place had a washing machine AND dryer. For the first time in 12 days I washed my socks and leggings, and my only 2 shirts and underwear got a true rinse and spin cycle not just a good sloshing around in a bathroom sink. Now that was worth the entire day’s trek! There’s always a glimmer, folks!!! 💃🏻🙌

Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words, and never stops at all.

I woke up early and was dreading the day. DREADING it. All we had heard the night before was how hard it would be. I was homesick and tired, and I just really wanted something to feel easy. Easy like get in a car and drive 2 min to Sonic for a cheeseburger easy. Not climb over a mountain, and another, and then keep going until you can’t feel your legs. But alas, here we are.

And so I prayed. Before getting out of bed I simply said, “please give me what I need.” Then I laced up my shoes and off we went.

Within 10 min of walking, I met Judy from Australia. My trail angel. We talked and laughed for hours as we acceded. She even let me sing my ridiculous songs because music is the best way I know to put a pep in your step. Before I knew it, we had made it to the top. Not because of me, but her. We bid farewell, as she was at her stop for the day, and we continued on.

I think sometimes we don’t want to admit that we need others. Just push through. Head down. Do the work. But that’s actually quite shitty. Having a friend to walk beside, to shoulder the heavy, to bring laughter and energy is a gift, not just for the receiver but for the giver.

Today’s Camino lesson - let others in. God’s love shines through them and that’s what we are here for! by @ashley_a_nutt

Today I came upon a painted stone that pointed to the village below and it said…

 “Look how far you’ve come”.

For me, this was not just about the village below but so so much more.

I left a job I loved and started a business with no guarantees that it would work. I visited a random language school that I found on the Internet only to discover it held the keys to my heart, and I am now able to share it with others. Then I decided to walk the Camino, something I knew relatively nothing about, all with the HOPE and FAITH that good things come when we put our trust in the right place.

Sometimes you just have to say, “Here I am Lord” and watch how far He will take you. ❤️ by @ashley_a_nutt

A little history lesson…

For over a thousand years, millions of pilgrims have walked across northern Spain to get to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the bones of St. James are said to be buried. Pilgrims believed their soul would spend less time in purgatory when they died if they completed this journey.

As I walk, I find myself thinking about the thousands of people who traveled before me. What their hardships were and how mine pale in comparison.

I love how traveling to give you a new perspective on the world. This trip shows me we are all way more alike than the media has us to believe. Kindness, compassion, empathy, and joy are universal. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. 🌎❤️ by @ashley_a_nutt

We came over the hill at sunrise and saw a group of cyclist from Colombia. A few kind words in Spanish and some shared laughter brought us together. We shared coffee, traded stories, and wished each other well, each of us going on toward our next destination.

Later, we met Sai, a coffee shop owner who lives in a little “Chosita” behind her stand. Her life’s mission is to provide a warm heart, words of encouragement, and a place to rest before travelers make the long hike up the mountain.

Hours into the walk I came across Lola, a new friend from Argentina. I call her “mi hermana en el Camino” because I have been drawn to her since day 1 when our paths crossed briefly outside of our first village. We sat on the side of the trail and shared our favorite Argentinian songs with one another. It was magical. She shared these lyrics…

“Puedes creer, puedes soñar, abre las alas, aquí es tu libertad…aprendas a volar”

“You can believe, you can dream, open your wings, here is your freedom…learn to fly”.

I sat on the side of a mountain and cried with gratitude for all these beautiful souls that I am privileged to walk with on this journey.

I cried with gratitude for the souls I walk with each week back home…

And for my angels who have shown me how to fly. 🪽❤️ by @ashley_a_nutt

John’s friend, Jimmy, has walked the Camino 4 times. He said…

“Keep in mind, it’s a 1-star vacation .” ⭐️

He was right, but it’s also so much more than that. It’s not cushy beds, or relaxing mornings, or food to die for.

It’s meeting a man who quit his job in Hong Kong to come find peace. It’s walking next to someone who described this as absolute freedom. He’s been in the trail since late August. It’s making it to the end of the day and realizing you made it. You did what felt impossible and when you look at your pictures you realize this world has so much offer if we will just stop and look around.

Do I miss my home, my bed, my dogs, a full pot of coffee, my family…absolutely. But you can miss something and also know you are where you are supposed to be.

And so for now, I will keep walking. 4 days down, 10 to go. by @ashley_a_nutt

Disclaimer: if you are already sick of Camino videos, feel free to skip past. I get it. I don’t usually post much about vacations when I’m away, but…

The whole reason I’m here is because I saw pictures of my dear friend, Nadine’s Camino, and although I knew nothing about it, after watching her journey I knew I wanted to experience it for myself.

So here I am, and today I realized her words that she shared with me this week have become the anthem to my journey.

I am here to walk with the world.

I am here to walk next to people who live very different lives from my own, and yet here, we are one.

The first few days I waffled between singing aloud 🎶 “This sh*t is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S” or “Hold on for one more day, things will go your way…hold on for one more day” 🎶

However, today was different, and despite the rain, I found myself singing 🎶 “We are the world, we are the children” 🎶 and I couldn’t help but tear up. What a gift.

So, to the answer peoples’ question of why I am doing this?

I am doing it to see God’s creation through the eyes of all humanity, and to experience what it feels like to live in harmony, with no borders, no judgement, just love. by @ashley_a_nutt
