It’s October 3rd. 💅🏻

Happy Mean Girls Day! One week left to catch the (absolutely excellent) Chicagoland premiere of Mean Girls, playing through October 11 at @paramountaurora.

10/10 recommend hopping the @metrarail and making a day of it by taking advantage of the many show-themed activities the @aurora.downtown shops and restaurants have to offer. Wearing pink is optional (except on Wednesdays, duh.)

Now Extended through October 11th ✨

The world premiere memoir of Tony-nominated theatre and trapeze artist Shana Carroll, The Attic, has been extended at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre.

I very much enjoyed this show, a mashup of mediums (think circus x musical theatre x film x poetry) that makes for exquisite storytelling. I definitely recommend adding this production to your show list this autumn. Opening Night: The Attic (Things I’ve Seen While Lying On My Back) ✨

The world premiere of Shana Carroll’s The Attic: Things I’ve Seen While Lying On My Back opened last night at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre and it is storytelling of the finest caliber.

This feverdream of performance mediums mashes up circus, dance, poetry, and musical theatre (with a touch of Jamie Lloyd-style audio-visual livestreaming) to bring to life a visually spectacular telling of Carroll’s life, from youth to early circus career to devastating diagnosis. Broadway fans will recognize some fun elements from Water For Elephants, for which Carroll served as co-choreographer and circus designer, earning a Chita Rivera award and Tony nomination.

I loved this production and definitely recommend checking it out, especially if you enjoy circus work or storytelling through dance. My adrenaline was rushing all night as this company of athletes literally flew themselves across that stage. There was a person in the house last night who just kept yelling “gorgeous!”, and while she was a bit distracting, she was not wrong in her assessment.

The only thing constant is change ✨

Steampunk sexpot Jekyll & Hyde is back, baby, and they are stronger than ever. 😈

Earlier this week I caught a preview of J&H’s transfer to the Broadway Playhouse as part of Broadway in Chicago’s season. So here’s the thing, I actually *loathe* this show. (Stay with me!)

I love dark material, and the score is full of bangers, but the story has always dragged for me - I could not care less about these melodramatic narcissists…until I was invited to an early preview of @kokandyprods take last year. Whew, now we’ve got a show.

So much of this production’s success comes (obviously) from its formidable lead trio: David T. Moreland, Ava Lane Stovall, and Emily McCormick. Much has and will continue to be said about their absolutely next-level vocal talent, but what is so remarkable to me is the humanity they each bring to their role. Against the backdrop of an (also extremely talented) ensemble of exaggerated, almost camp caricatures, the sincerity of these three, along with their chemistry, makes their inevitable fates all the more gutting. (I am decidedly not a romantic, but Take Me As I Am had me joy-weeping and believing for a moment that blissful love conquers all, even literal demons. What a feat 🖤)

Broadway in Chicago’s remount has kept the original local cast and orchestra; such a great reflection of the Chicago storefront theatre community and the talent that exists when you venture outside of the Loop and explore neighborhood theatres. There’s a reason so many, yours truly included, have chosen Chicago as their artistic home.

Jekyll & Hyde is running through November 8. I absolutely recommend planning a visit during spooky season. Buckle up. 👻

So fetch 💅🏻

We had so much fun at last night’s opening of the Chicago area premiere of Mean Girls, the musical based on the hit film that became a pop culture mainstay over 20 years ago (!) The show maintains the key elements of the movie, with updates that make it current (I heard someone describe it as “a mean girls for modern times” and promptly died. Find me in the elder millennial graveyard 👵)

The city of Aurora is fully leaning in, with area restaurants offering themed specials throughout the run. Checkout Paramount’s website & insta for a list of specials and make a night of it!

The show’s score is a belt-apollooza and thankfully this cast has the vocal chops to pull it off. They sound incredible, and are well-directed throughout. (Congrats to Devon Hayakawa on their Paramount solo directing debut! Excellent work.)

I definitely recommend making a trip to Aurora for this one. Congrats to the full company, and thanks to @paramountaurora for having us out!

Hall of Famers ⚾️

I love Chicago so much. While running errands this afternoon, I cut through Gallagher Way, not thinking anything would be going on since it was still hours before gates even open at Wrigley for the game. As I was passing the Cubs offices, people started coming out of the doors, and with a flash of blue I realized it was the Hall of Fame Cubs players, likely there to celebrate the induction of Jon Lester and Jody Davis. I first saw Derrick Lee, and Jon Lester (carrying a full glass of beer, respect 🫡) , then suddenly Sammy freaking Sosa was a few feet away from me, and Billy Williams walked by as I just grinned like an idiot.

This isn’t the first time I’ve bumped into heroes near the Friendly Confines, but it was certainly the most HoF legends in one encounter.

I finished my errands and was home in time to watch the game from the comfort of my couch. Rizzo in the booth. PCA doing his thing. That’s Cub, baby.
