My dearest Zaida 🤍

It’s been about a month since you left us and there is a very big Zaida-shaped hole in all of our lives.

You were more than just the best Zaida or the person who somehow always made sure everyone was okay. You were simply one of the best people I have ever known. He spent his life making sure people were okay. He gave his time, his knowledge, his hands and his heart. He helped people, often quietly and sometimes without anyone ever knowing. He gave because he could, and he never expected anything in return.

You also made sure there were memories. You were rarely without your camera, capturing everyone and everything. And now somehow, those thousands of photographs have become pieces of you that we get to hold onto.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the little pieces lately. Your little Friday messages, the calls, the lifts, the cups of tea. All the little things that quietly made up a lifetime of looking after people.

You once told me, “What a waste of time,” when I was upset about an argument I was having. I think about that a lot now.

Because if you taught me anything, it was that life is about people. About love. About showing up. About making someone’s life a little easier simply because you can.

And I’m trying to do that now.

Grief is strange. It isn’t a straight line. Some days I can laugh, work, carry on and pretend the world feels normal. Other days, the smallest thing can knock the air out of me. It’s hard knowing that the world keeps moving when the person you love is suddenly missing from it. And we all feel that or have felt that in some way or another.

I don’t think anyone really prepares you for grief. The world keeps moving, even when a part of yours has stopped.

The week Zaida passed, a bee appeared around him. The next day, when I went back to his house, another was flying around the statue outside.

I don’t believe that was a coincidence.

And somehow, a bee feels very fitting for you. Always busy. Always giving. Always moving. Always doing something for someone else. 🐝

So now, when I see one, I’ll think of you.

I’m trying to carry on because I know you would want me to. You would tell me to get up, see the world by @ashleyblock
