Thinking of my fellow survivors, the victims, their families, and all touched by the Route 91 Harvest Festival mass shooting in Las Vegas. The anniversaries never get easier but I can say, nine years later, that it is clear that joy and sorrow can co-exist. My heart is broken that this event happened. So much was lost and the lives of thousands were changed forever. That pain will always be present, but there were also unexpected blessings that followed. I am forever grateful to God for the incredible humans and community that have come into my life since that night. You’ve been a blessing to my life that no words could ever convey. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo said something during the sunrise ceremony this morning that imprinted on my heart and should there be any advice or sentiment I couldn’t agree with more after walking this survivor’s journey, it is this. “There will always be a struggle between light and darkness, but we must choose the light and we must live in it. That means rejecting hatred, defending those in danger, and bringing comfort to the people who are suffering.” Please take a moment to read the names of the 58 beautiful souls taken by this senseless act of violence. Happy Hannah Montana Day to all who celebrate! 🎉 20 years ago, Hannah gave hope to small town dreamers who craved the city lights, proving you could be both a country girl and a city girl. A few years later, this country girl moved to LA , chasing after a dream of working in television. I find no irony in the fact that my very first television job was next door to the Hannah Montana set. It was so fun living next door to Hannah and it was like this special little reminder, on days when I was homesick or wondering if I made the right choice, that if you worked hard, you really could have the best of both worlds. Today felt like the right day to bring these out of the archives. Shout out to my fellow Midwesterner, @tayvanb , for being my PA partner in crime and a true Hannah fan (and for noticing a set door left open just enough that we could shimmy onto the set of Hannah’s house for some fun pics). Thank you to Miley and her family for always being kind and generous, always taking the time to stop and talk with those who loved the show. Those small moments were big moments to so many of us. I could have never written the story of the young me in this photo, but what I can say, is it has been a hell of a ride. All of these years later, I’m still working in television and doing the dance between the city and the country, because as it turns out, Hannah was absolutely right. Hopland, California: Home to happiness and donkey snuggles ❤️ Had the wonderful privilege of getting to spend a morning last week at @oscarsplaceofficial - an incredible sanctuary dedicated to changing and saving the lives of donkeys in need of rescue, rehoming, or rehabilitation. This place and the humans who care for these sweet creatures are beyond special. And donkeys? The coolest animal - smart, gentle, cuddly, and beyond adorable. Want to know more? Storytelling is a wild, beautiful career. It takes me all over the world and it allows me the opportunity to walk in the shoes of other fantastic humans. And in some special cases, a story takes your heart back home ❤️ This week I got to begin Women’s Empowerment Month by interviewing and helping honor Iowa basketball legend, Denise Long - the first woman drafted into the NBA. Scoring over 100 points in multiple games, Denise (and team) made national news, taking home the state championship playing 6-on-6 women’s basketball. After breaking record after record in high school, she was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 1969 and there’s no doubt her hook shot was the first crack in the glass ceiling that led to where women’s basketball is today. I cannot wait to share more so soon!
