Did you know a cougar can jump 18 feet straight up? that's higher than most people's roofs 🐆

• Florida panther (cougar) is an endangered species
• an adult male roams around 200 square miles. he needs his space
• cubs are born covered in polka dots, then fade to tan as they grow so they blend in
• there are only about 120–230 left in the wild

if you're into the connection between wildlife, art and biomaterials, I write about it on my substack, mind & matter (link in bio)

Still thinking about the Sustainable Design Impact Hub: Fashion x Deep Tech Edition at Newlab last week 🧵

Grateful to @shannenkayliaaa for putting together a room like this, full of people working on the part of fashion that doesn’t make it onto the moodboard: materials, infrastructure, procurement, data, scale.

A few things I haven’t stopped thinking about:
“Materials are systems change.” Not just a product problem. A structural one.

The panel on traceability + digital product passports went beyond the usual transparency talk. That data can create a more intimate buying experience, and build infrastructure for better decisions down the line.

The procurement panel with @lonelywhale was one of the most stimulating conversations of the day: the green premium isn’t the business model anymore. If a material costs more, can you make the case for reducing CO2 without losing performance?

And the closing conversation on push vs. pull has stayed with me. Sometimes it’s less about pushing harder, more about pooling resources together, and knowing what you’re actually trying to prove.

Good room. Good people. Genuine excitement about the future of alternative materials 🌱

The duvet cover was looking too tired to keep being a duvet cover, so I cut into it, sewed a pattern through the fabric, stretched it over a frame, painted it in acrylic, then hit it with a clear spray. by @ashleyroedotcom

The shark has never lost a tooth permanently. 🫠

Humans get two sets of teeth. A shark gets around 20,000 over its lifetime.

Its teeth are arranged in rows, almost like a conveyor belt. Lose one, another slides forward. Depending on the species, that can happen every couple of weeks. Some great whites can replace a tooth in as little as 24 hours.

Here’s what I can’t stop thinking about.

A shark doesn’t repair what’s broken. It replaces it.

The system isn’t designed for every individual part to last forever. It’s designed so the whole system never stops working.

Shark skin is basically made of tiny teeth.
They’re called dermal denticles, microscopic tooth-like structures that point backward and help water glide over the body with less drag.

Sharks existed before trees.

450 million years to be exact.

They’ve survived every mass extinction the planet has thrown at them, not because they’re the biggest or the strongest, but because they’re built for continuous adaptation.

Nature never optimizes for permanence.
