We give our darkness a face that belongs to someone else. This short film follows Jung’s idea of the shadow: the parts of ourselves we push into exile, and the moral effort it takes to turn and face them.

Jung called the shadow “a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality” (Aion, CW 9ii, par. 14). What we refuse to see in ourselves, we meet in others: in the enemy, the stranger, the one we cannot stand. Like Icarus on wings of wax, the one who wants only the light forgets the body and the earth, and the sea rises to receive him.

To face the shadow is to open the door to the beggar, the thief, the outcast, and to call him brother. Only one who can say “I too am dark” can bear the darkness in another.

A dream story 🔊

Under the moonlight,
I’m in a floating house.
Two wolves are approaching.
There’s a wide opening
Like a door.
The house
Binds to a tree.
I know the wolves will enter.
I reach for the snout
Of one
Laying my hand onto it.
It growls.
And takes my hand
Into its jaws.
Pressing down.
As I grip its mouth
From the inside.
The second wolf
Takes my other hand.
I endure the pain
Meeting its strength
With my own.

My grandma Maria Soledad. Yesterday she pulled out a box of old photographs, further reminding me of how vastly different our lives have been. And the complexity of the ancestral history we each carry. A loud contrast of environment, circumstance and experience created in just 2 generations.
