Last week I was photographing the Commonwealth Games.

It was easily the hardest work I’ve ever done. Long days, late nights, and a whole lot of learning. There were seven of us behind all the content, and I genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better team. I couldn’t have done any of it without them @timmarshall.nz @alexspencenz @hannahswiift @dom.thomas @michaeldawson.nz @buzzygramguy

Since I got home, every time someone has asked me how the Games went, I get emotional.

Two years ago I was sitting behind a desk wondering if I was meant to be doing something else. I never would’ve believed this could be my life. Maybe that’s why it gets me every time someone asks?

I don’t say this very often… but I think I’m just really proud. What a privilege it is to be a part of the @thenzteam 🖤🌿 by @ashmaffs

So incredibly proud to be part of @thenzteam 🖤🌿

These images stuck out to me amongst thousands of photos, because of how they make me feel. I’m not really chasing the technically perfect photo. I’m chasing the ones that make you stop for a second and wonder what that person was thinking or feeling when I pressed the shutter.

If someone can look at one of these photos and feel like they were there, even just for a second, then I reckon I’ve done my job.

Holy sh*t… I still can’t believe I got to shoot the Commonwealth Games. taken in Glasgow, Scotland by @ashmaffs

Biting off more than you can chew.

I don’t think you get to a point where you suddenly feel ready for everything. You just have more experiences to look back on and remind yourself that you’ve worked things out before 🤷‍♀️

A sunny afternoon thought, brought to you by procrastination. by @ashmaffs

How I got started in sports content 📹

Trying to make these videos as quickly as possible, not getting stuck in that perfection mindset. Dirty setup, bit noisy, not phased 👈(❛ ᗜ ❛👈) by @ashmaffs

Flew halfway around the world to do something wildly outside my comfort zone. Turns out that’s a pretty good reason to do it.

Thank you @anocolympic for the event and to all my new NOC mates! taken in Italy by @ashmaffs

72 hours in Italy and a layover in Hong Kong. Two places I’ve never been and no room for my camera (˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥⋆)

Decided I’d use my iPhone, shoot in log and grade in DaVinci resolve (I’m a premiere girlie). Twas fun! by @ashmaffs

Happy hump day 💃

To clarify: it’s 2am in Glasgow, I’ve just exported the last video of the Games, and I’m dancing around my room holding electrolytes and a slice of brown bread by @ashmaffs

There’s a lot you learn just by being around people who care deeply about what they do.

A few things I took away from working at the Commonwealth Games and spending time around some of New Zealand’s top athletes. by @ashmaffs

Forcing myself to process this, so I pulled this mishmash video together before I could overthink it.

I have a habit of moving straight onto the next thing without really acknowledging myself or what I’ve achieved. If it were someone else’s cool achievement, I’d be shouting it from the rooftops.

So the least I can do for myself, is sit with this for two minutes.

Definitely not perfect. Photographer-ing and all 🫶 by @ashmaffs
