A lovely day spent making pleated lampshades with Gemma from Ashoka Designs

Our paths first crossed many years ago when we were both at the beginning of our lampshade-making journeys, so it was wonderful to spend some time together again.

The day was filled with pleating, stitching, sharing ideas, swapping skills and talking through the countless little details that go into a beautifully made lampshade.

Here, we’re working with a beautiful Ian Sanderson Pinto fabric in the Blue Bronze colour-way, alongside one of my favourite details: a hand-finished pleated lining. It’s often the inside of a lampshade that reveals the most about the craftsmanship behind it.

These are some of the traditional lampshade making techniques I teach on my lampshade making courses here in Hampshire.

Days like these are a lovely reminder that there’s always something new to learn, refine and share.
