A long drive home from Cardiff through the most spectacular sunset. I've often said that we are western people rather than eastern people. by @ashropshirepatch

Every summer I reread one of my childhood books. They have been sitting on my shelves for decades and their spines are like old friends. This year I was undecided about which one to choose until @jothroughthekeyhole posted about reading The Railway Children. This is my copy, last read almost fifty years ago. I love the film and have seen it many times and this Puffin edition, published in 1974 when you could buy a new paperback book for 30p, shows a still from the end of the film, which stays very close to the book. As an eldest daughter, often responsible for looking after my younger sisters, I have always felt that I am Bobbie.

Tiddlepom is seven years old and keen to learn to crochet so last weekend she and I sat down together with yarn and hooks and she made her first chain. Her goal is to make a bag with flowers on in time for next year's August folk festival. by @ashropshirepatch

When my cousin lent me this book she described it as "good but a bit weird". After reading it, I completely agree with her. I don't usually like "weird" books but this one is good and I enjoyed it very much so I'm recommending it to all of you.

A year ago today my father died, quietly, at home, as he wished, with his wife, children and a grandson surrounding him. As he gently faded, we took turns to read aloud from a book of stories which he read to all of us when we were little. Four days earlier we had busted him out of a grim hospital room and, with the help of district nurses, Marie Curie and City Hospice in Cardiff, we nursed him at home until the end. We discovered skills we didn't know we had. The family rallied round and looked after us while we looked after Dad. A nurse who happened to be in the room when Dad died said that it was obvious that he was very much loved. He was. He still is. I miss him.

Happy Birthday to Helen Beatrix Potter, born on this day in 1866. She was a writer, artist, scientist, businesswoman, conservationist, supporter of the Girl Guides, farmer and the first woman to be elected President of The Herdwick Sheep Breeders' Association. She was ahead of her time and she's one of my heroes.

If the weather is hot during strawberry season, I make strawberry granita. Delia Smith's recipe is so easy - just strawberries, something to sweeten them, lemon juice and water. There's a tubful in my freezer. After six days of sweltering temperatures, I'm ready to climb in there with it.

The temperature has been at least 32°C for the last four days, far too hot for me to cook. It's salad every day and my challenge is to keep it varied and interesting for the Best Beloved who doesn't like salad as much as I do. So tonight, I took a bag of Mediterranean vegetables with giant couscous out of the freezer (Merchant Gourmet, on offer at £1.75 in Tesco) , defrosted it in the popty ping, turned it into a big bowl and added diced cucumber, halved cherry tomatoes, a heap of torn basil leaves and chopped chicken left over from Monday's roast. I served it on a bed of shredded lettuce and he almost skipped to the table! It was delicious. I hope everyone is keeping safe in this extraordinary weather - take care all. by @ashropshirepatch

I have spent the weekend at the Montgomeryshire Literary Festival in Wales. I listened to some wonderful writers speak about their books, drank tea, ate homemade cake and knitted (because yesterday was Worldwide Knitting In Public Day). It's a lovely festival, firmly rooted in the Welsh countryside.

When the Best Beloved and I used to holiday in Cornwall my tick list included a crab sandwich, a pasty and a cream tea. However, all of that has gone out of the window now that we go with our daughter and grandchildren. Pub lunches and tea gardens are not their idea of fun. However, we did go out for breakfast at Trerise Farm Shop Cafe and it was delicious. I had hash browns with onion, mushrooms, cheese, sausage and hog's pudding - and it was served on a vintage Marks & Spencer 'Harvest' plate. Oh, be still my beating heart! taken in Trerise Farm Shop & Cafe by @ashropshirepatch

We spent half term camping in Cornwall, three generations and a dog. The weather was incredible. We spent the days on the beach and the evenings around a campfire with my sister and her family. Many s'mores were eaten and stories told. by @ashropshirepatch

I signed up to the Spring #KindnessByPost exchange organised by @mhc_uk. It's a lovely thing to do: you send a letter or card to somebody and somebody else sends one to you. The kindness of strangers is beautiful. Thank you Lisa. by @ashropshirepatch
