POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

My grandfather wasn’t a US citizen until after college, my dad spent the first bit of his childhood in Mexico.
My instinct is to tell you about their successes, but just as @pagecactus pointed out, “Our immigrant fathers do not need to be labeled as hardworking to deserve rest or safety. Their dignity is not transactional. Not conditional.”
My next instinct is to go into detail about how I don’t look like it, but I’m 25% Spanish—as if I need to justify this addition to the plethora of reasons for my outrage. I don’t feel “Mexican enough”—but the more I ruminate, the more I wonder wtf that even means. We’re all just people, dude. No matter who or where or why, this is fked. No matter where your family lines trace back to geographically, this is v much a 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 problem. This isn’t news to anyone, I’m preaching to the choir here & I know it. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠.

When I was little, I remember feeling baffled Popi had access to a 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘻𝘻 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 that the majority of our fam didn’t, being fluent in Spanish. It makes sense then that works translated from Spanish turned out to be what makes me feel most in tune with the fiery lil mija within.
You can feel the beauty of the relationship between the Spanish & English language in translated works, and thats nothing compared to the beauty of our cultures merging IRL. But of course, leave it to the orange dummy to ruin everything.

After spending 3 days in the limbo that is ~lurking but not posting~, I wanna highlight some of the works translated from Spanish on my shelves ❣️

(I may be rambling in hindsight, we’ll see. My brain is mush. Someone just make it all stoppppp 🫠) taken in BOOKSTA by @ashsaxreadsstacks

I saw @bryn_thebookworm do this & loved comparing our favs & where we both started as I swiped thru... So I had to put one together w some of my most-read authors! (& apparently also had to add an E to Ann Rule's name, even tho it's literally RIGHT THERE on the covers 👍🏻)

After attending a @buzzbooksofficial live call, I knew I needed 200 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙨 in my life ASAP.
I was lucky enough to win a copy of each book mentioned that evening, but 200 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙨 was #1 on my list w/o question—the sec my copy arrived I dropped all other reads & dove in.

My 👀 couldn't take 200 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙨 in fast enough, so the sec 🎧 was also available on NG I requested it so I could sprint to the end of this wild ride...
𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 🎧—@voicedbyvanessa fuggin KILLLLLED it. Having started w/ my 👀 I was so curious how a narrator would handle the moans, specifically—Vanessa nailed 'em. It wasn't unbearably awk, sounding authentic w/o making me any more uncomfy than came w the territory. Consider me woo'd.

During the Buzz Books call, Jan herself dubbed this a unique take on grief. Having dealt w grief in strange ways myself, I was so looking forward to seeing how our FMC Arvy would handle it.

She did not disappoint, holy sh!t. This is WILD but in all of the best ways. 𝘌𝘴𝘱 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘣𝘶𝘵, I was nervous things could take a disrespectful turn if not done right (I mean, drug induced O's & a ☠️ mom? OOOOF!). 𝐔𝐧𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝, Jan played this perfectly. It's no wonder she's already got the screenplay in the works (which I CANNOT wait for, btw).

I'm not a romance girlie—in fact, if anything, I'm known to be the opposite...𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭 𝘯𝘰𝘸. Jan was so sneaky w the cute shit that it sucked me right in. 𝙈𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 by @_elainecastillo is the only other novel to have uncovered this side of me.

The best (& only) true comparison I can make is @kimberlykingparsons' 𝙒𝙚 𝙒𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚. So, if you loved the vibe of that gem, 200 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙨 is for you.

𝘐'𝘮 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘢 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 & 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵.
Full transparency, I'm in the middle of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) & it's got my brain all wonky lately...but I didn't want to wait any longer to shout from the rooftops that this is a banger.

Thank you times a milli to @jansaenz @voicedbyvanessa @littlebrown @hachetteaudio @buzzbooksofficial & @netgalley for the physical ARC, finished copy, DRC & ALC 🫶🏻 taken in BOOKSTA by @ashsaxreadsstacks
