My grandmother was an excellent letter writer. This is an excerpt from a letter she wrote to me on the first anniversary of 9/11, 2002…

“Billy Graham said it best in his address at the memorial service for 9/11. There are really only two choices - to become bitter and depressed or to help shed love and understanding…

“I have great faith we will all be together one day but in the meantime, those we lost on 9/11 would want us, and I would want those left behind me, to live each day grateful for the life each of us have - for its many blessings, most of which we take for granted. These low times are eased for me when I count the joys in my life and that lifts me.

“God’s greatest gift is surely our hope for the world to come - and meanwhile there are the multitudinous gifts for this life - from eyes to see with, to hearts to love with. How do we forget this so easily?

“It seems we turn to God mostly in times of hurt and sadness - as our ultimate comfort - so we must believe He is there even in the day to day, else why would we seek Him?

“From those who’ve moved on to a life with “no more tears” we do indeed have a legacy. Yes, we will shed tears, but we can then dry them and live joyfully.

“I don’t know why it has always helped me to write things on paper, so I am grateful for that one small blessing. I don’t know that I will mail this - it has served the purpose for me. Perhaps you can find one small blessed way to find comfort, and even joy, in the day, and the courage and acceptance of peace.”

Obviously, she did mail@it to me. 💖 The only thing I’d add is this. Do you remember how kind we were to one another on September 12, and then for quite some time? It didn’t matter who we had voted for, what color our skin was, what we did for a living, how we came to this country, what age we were, what gender we were, or who we loved. We loved our country, we were grieving, and in our bereavement and fear, we held each other up. I hope we never experience an attack like 9/11 again, but I long for the kindness and community we had there, at least for a little while 🇺🇸💔 #neverforget taken in Dallas, Texas by @ashthamesbrown

When she was way too young, we lost Brian’s healthy, vibrant mom to ovarian cancer. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month so I want to share something I recently learned. Did you know most ovarian cancers begin in the fallopian tubes? That’s why it can be challenging to find until the disease is advanced. Please read and share this important article about salpingectomy - yeh, I never heard of it either! Thank you @katiecouric for raising awareness and saving lives. #ovariancancer #cancerawareness

If you told me a year ago I’d be teaching preschool art at the school our oldest daughter attended 25 years ago I would have said, “I WISH!” Here’s proof wishes come true because I get my first students next week! I’ve had a ball connecting with school leaders and teachers and brushing up on my early childhood development and process art skills.
