As we head into the last weekend of #APAHM 2026, it has been amazing to see all the events happening around Chicagoland this month. We were so excited to cheer on and support our friends, grantee partners, and community allies as they uplifted our community.⁣
⁣
To kick off the month, Asian Giving Circle @asiangivingcircle and The Chicago Community Trust @thechicagocommunitytrust were honored to receive the Visionary of the Year award at Chinese Mutual Aid Association @cmaachicago 's 𝟒𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐚, 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 & 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. ⁣

For nearly 25 years, AGC has supported the Chicagoland region through community-based philanthropic funding. AGC's founders saw a gap in how much philanthropic funding was reaching our communities, so they took it upon themselves to build a collective giving model that would mobilize individual donors to amplify collective impact. ⁣
⁣
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: to everyone who chooses to give, to show up, and to believe in something bigger than themselves.⁣
⁣
We were honored that so many of our circle were able to join us, from the past (original founders), to the present, and the next generation. 𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐆𝐂 𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫.⁣
⁣
Thank you for letting us be part of this work and this community. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝, 𝐬𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭.⁣

🐴 Happy Lunar New Year!

Last week, Asian Giving Circle (AGC) members had the joy of welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse 🔥🐴 alongside a gathering of philanthropic and nonprofit leaders, fundraisers, and community members at our 4th annual Lunar New Year social — in collaboration with our friends at Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP) @aapip_org Chicago /PAAAC and the Association of Fundraising Professionals Chicago Chapter @afpchicago API Affinity Group. Thank you to the planning and logistics team that brought everything together, and a special thank you to the Robert R. McCormick Foundation @mccormick_fdn and their team for being such wonderful hosts. 🙏

The Year of the Horse brings strength, courage, and balance. At the social, we also reflected on themes from our 2025 Inaugural Nonprofit & Philanthropic Leadership Series, where leaders across our community reminded us how we can all lead right now:

🤝 Seek human connection and collaboration
🌱 Make hope a discipline through small, everyday acts
🚀 Think with a growth mindset about the things you haven't done yet

So as you step into this Lunar New Year — what is the thing you haven't done YET?

Here are a few ways to answer that call:
✅Get connected with AAPIP/PAAAC
✅If you're a fundraising professional (or aspiring to be one), connect with the AFP Chicago API Affinity
✅Join us at the AGC Annual Meeting on April 16 at The Chicago Community Trust @thechicagocommunitytrust — learn about our strategic plan, growth priorities, and how to get more deeply involved (register in the link in our profile)

AGC In Community Spotlight

In early December, AGC hosted a grant partner and funder's convening for our Year 2 Asian American Community Development Fund (AACDF grant). It was a great convening with lots of community building and learnings. We enjoyed getting to see our friends from grant partners Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) , @cmaachicago ,SpaceShift Collective @spaceshiftcollective , HEART Women & Girls @hearttogrow , Chinese American Service League (@caslmedia ,KAN-WIN @kanwinchicago , Vietnamese Association of Illinois @vai_chicago , FILIPINO AMERICAN COUNCIL OF GREATER CHICAGO / @rizal.center . We were also thrilled that funders from Grand Victoria Foundation @gvf_illinois , MacArthur Foundation , and @thechicagocommunitytrust spoke about the funding landscape, and what funders are doing to support grantees, and to move forward.

In November, AGC leaders had the opportunity to connect in person with our fellow leaders from the other affinity funds at The Chicago Community Trust in the spirit of building thought collaboration and connection across our giving funds/circles. We got to connect with Young Leaders Fund @youngleadersfund
, African American Legacy, Nuestro Futuro, Disabilities Fund, LGBTQ Community Fund

@aapip_org Chicago Chapter, @afpchicago API Affinity Group, & AGC were thrilled to host a packed house at the @mccormick_fdn for our final installment of our inaugural Nonprofit & Philanthropic AAPI Leadership Series, a conversation b/w 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚, 𝐌𝐃, President & CEO of @joycefdn , & 𝐑𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐇𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐧, columnist & lead opinion writer at the Chicago Sun-Times. Both native Chicagoans, Julie & Rummana shared a dynamic exchange on leadership, equity, & navigating the current political climate.⁣⁣

Conversation highlights:

☑️ 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞⁣⁣
Leadership is coordination, collaboration, teamwork, & solidarity. It’s a big responsibility — because as a collective, we’re stronger together.⁣⁣
☑️ 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐲 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭⁣⁣
In today’s political climate, philanthropy must be nimble. We’ve had to rethink how dollars get out the door while staying true to our mission⁣⁣
☑️ 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦⁣⁣
Requests far outpace available resources. You have to be strategic — & find partners who share your core values and principles⁣⁣
☑️ 𝐁𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲-𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥-𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝⁣⁣
There are many paths to one goal. Experience what you experience, & apply it to what comes next. You don’t know what’s next — so enjoy what you’re doing⁣⁣
☑️ 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐞⁣⁣
For future philanthropists: being mission-driven helps, but patience and long-term thinking are essential.⁣⁣
🙏 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞?⁣⁣
Human connection gives me hope. Collaboration gives me hope. There are so many ways to connect in this city. Be open. Seek opportunities. Give space — even when you don’t see eye to eye.⁣
⁣
🙏 Thank you to the leaders who shared their insights this year. Your stories, strategies, and spirit continue to inspire.⁣
👏 Deep appreciation for the organizing team for bringing this series to life.⁣
✨ Stay tuned for future events & collaborations⁣

Just returned from the 2025 Affinity Funds Summit hosted by The Chicago Community Trust—and I’m feeling energized, inspired, and deeply connected.

The day was filled with powerful sessions that blended strategy, storytelling, and skill-building. One standout was the workshop on building community wealth, where we explored models like worker cooperatives, shared equity housing, and community investment vehicles—real tools for community-led change.

Other highlights included:

• Governance insights from the LGBTQ Community Fund
• Fundraising strategies using matching gifts from Asian Giving Circle and LGBTQ Community Fund
• A collaborative brainstorm with the Disabilities Fund on cross-fund partnerships
• And a heartfelt session on starting your own giving circle—because big change often starts small.

It was also great to connect with the incredible staff from The Chicago Community Trust—thank you for creating space for learning, reflection, and collective action.

Grateful to be in community with these inspiring affinity funds:
African American Legacy, Asian Giving Circle, Disabilities Fund, LGBTQ Community Fund, Nuestro Futuro, and Young Leaders Fund.

@aapip_org - Chicago , @afpchicago -API Affinity Group , and AGC continued their AAPI Leadership Series in July featuring 𝐍𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚 𝐑𝐡𝐞𝐞, Co-Founder and ED of @borderless_mag , in conversation with 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐞 𝐊𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐜, Executive Director of @hanacenterchicago . Nissa and Danae had an engaging back and forth conversation on leadership transition, organizational resilience, community engagement, & navigating challenges in the current political climate. Here are some of the insights!

☑️𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭 No one is born to be an ED. As a leader you will experience so many things you haven’t had to do before. A fixed mindset says "I can't do this because I haven't done it before." A growth mindset says "I haven't done this YET."

☑️𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Despite federal threats to immigrant communities, HANA Center will continue bold advocacy and coalition building, while balancing risk and prioritizing staff and community safety. As a leader, you're always doing risk analysis, but make sure that analysis isn't being done alone. Include your staff, board, & coalition partners.

☑️𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 As a Korean adoptee, I've known what it feels like to not belong, which has allowed me to engage with multiple generations and experiences to build together what it means to be Korean American. This helps ensure that our programs —like ESL and Korean language classes—reflect diverse experiences

☑️𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 With shifting demographics and upcoming elections, HANA Center is expanding outreach in suburban areas & building pathways for multilingual voter education and civic participation.

🙏𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞? Everyday people give me hope. People are finding ways to donate small amounts, volunteer, and spread resources. Hope lives in these small acts.

Support Borderless, HANA center and register for our next leadership series (9/25) (see our linktree)
