WHAT YOU PERCEIVE vs. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED •
-
A while back I had Asi Wind @asiwind on the Huberman Lab podcast. He is among the greatest living magicians and mentalists alive today. The reason I had him on a science and health podcast is that the sort of work he does reveals features of our perception that are not otherwise recognized. In other words, he reveals aspects of how your brain works.
-
Here Asi does an absolutely astonishing trick. I promise I was not in on it in anyway. There were several people in the room as well, some filming and some just watching.
-
Two questions for you:
1) How do you think he did it?
2) How often in every day life do you think your perception causes you to believe something happened that actually did not?
-
Bonus: do you believe in magic? Serious question.
-
Asi has a show in London Right now called Incredibly Human. I’ve seen his live shows and they are very close quarters and unlike anything else you’ve ever experienced so if you’re lucky enough to be able to see it, it’s rolling until January 5. I don’t have any financial relationship to the show or Asi, I just highly recommend it.
-
You can find the episode with Asi by going to hubermanlab.com and put “asi wind” into the search bar. It is timestamped there in detail so you can navigate quickly to the topics most of interest to you.
-
Meanwhile, please put any questions or comments or suggestions about future topics that you’d like me to cover on the Huberman Lab podcast in the comments section below this post.
-
And as always, thank you for your interest in science!

This is one of my favorite plots in card magic. To my brothers and sisters in magic, if you feel the urge to reveal the secret behind this beautiful trick, please come up with wild explanations. Be creative and go crazy. taken in New York, New York by @asiwind

I started performing at the Magic Castle at age 22. Who would have thought that I will be honored to be the artist in residence last month. I got to play in three different rooms: the close-up gallery, the parlor, and the palace. Although it was exhausting, it was also a thrill. Even though I only had to kick out one person in the middle of the show, the audience was amazing. I got to work out a lot of new tricks. But the biggest perk of being the artist in residence was getting a lot of my friends to come and work the Castle alongside me

Every opportunity for me to talk about Juan Tamariz and share stories about the legend and the privilege of knowing him is a gift by @asiwind

I first saw Juan Tamariz when I was around 15 years old, and my life has changed ever since. Anyone who knows me can tell how much Juan influenced my magic, and I can’t be grateful enough for all these opportunities to learn from the maestro. I have been so fortunate to have so many memories with one of the most special human beings I have ever met. When the time comes, and I can talk more about him without crying, I would love to share those memories with anyone willing to listen. When Juan walked off stage after his shows, he would say to the microphone, while people were still recovering from the impact of his show, “I love Tamariz,” which always got a laugh. Every time he said it, I remember thinking, he took the words out of my mouth because I love Tamariz by @asiwind

I dreaded this day for years. Today is the saddest day for magic and one of the most painful days for me personally. If it weren’t for Juan Tamariz, I would not be the magician I am today. I am fortunate to have known him and spent time with him. My hero is gone, and it hurts. I will miss you, Maestro by @asiwind

This book has been a passion project of mine for a while. Some of my most cherished books are the ones that opened the door to this fascinating, beautiful world of magic. My goal with this book was to make it both detailed and informative, with my favorite collection of easy-to-do magic, and also a beautiful art book with over 200 watercolor paintings. Although this book is mainly geared towards laypeople, I have included a few new tricks that I am very proud of, and some old forgotten tricks that have fooled some of my seasoned magician friends. I am also very grateful for the brilliant foreword by Jason Alexander.
Lastly, I want to thank my editors, John Lovick and Jamy Ian Swiss; with their help, this book turned out even better than I hoped. I’m proud to share How Did You Do That? with you.

The book is now available for pre-order and it will start shipping at the end of September. asiwindstore.com taken in Los Angeles, California by @asiwind

I have been practicing this trick for years and never performed it for anyone because I never felt I did well enough. Here’s another coffee shop practice session. Keeping in line with one of my favorite sayings: Don’t strive to be good; strive to be better.

I don’t do many coin tricks, but the coins across plot is my favorite. For years, coin and card magic have competed for attention. Why do you think coins have never become as popular as card magic?
