Note: Not everyone who experiences these things is dissociating, but they can be common signs.

Dissociation isn’t always obvious.

Dissociation isn’t always easy to recognize.

Dissociation doesn’t always look the way people expect.

Dissociation can be surprisingly subtle.

Sometimes it’s your nervous system’s way of creating distance from something that feels overwhelming.

Checking a few boxes doesn’t necessarily mean someone has a dismissive avoidant attachment style.
Sometimes these are simply ways a nervous system learned to stay safe.

Sometimes the behaviors that push people away began as the behaviors that once helped someone survive.🤍

Acceptance doesn’t mean you like who they are.

It means you stop waiting for the personality update to download.

And that’s when boundaries finally get easier:

“If this is who you are, then this is how close I can safely be to you.”

No more waiting for the potential.
No more investigating.
No more refreshing the character development page.

Case closed. Adjust access accordingly.

Sometimes dysregulation looks like:

Checking your phone over and over because they haven’t texted back.

Re-reading a message trying to figure out if their tone changed.

Feeling your stomach drop because someone suddenly seems distant.

Going completely quiet during conflict because you can’t find the words.

If you recognize yourself here, try this before reacting:

Separate what happened from what your nervous system is predicting.
“They haven’t texted me back” is a fact.
“They’re losing interest in me” is a prediction.

Give your body something calming before asking another person to calm it for you.
Put the phone down. Take a shower. Go for a walk. Eat something. Clean something. Call a friend about something completely unrelated. Give your body time to come down before deciding what the situation means.

Don’t make decisions at the peak of the feeling.
You don’t have to send the paragraph, end the relationship, apologize for something you didn’t do, or pretend you don’t care. Wait until your body is calmer, then decide what actually needs a response.

And if you do need reassurance, ask for it clearly instead of trying to earn it.
“You seem a little distant today. Are we okay?” is very different from sending five texts, overexplaining, or abandoning your own needs because you’re afraid they’ll leave.

The goal isn’t to never get dysregulated.

It’s to notice when your nervous system has taken over before you let it write the rest of the story.

If your body doesn’t trust that you can slow down, change what’s happening, or stop when something hurts, it may start protecting you before you consciously realize you need protection.

That protection can look like bracing, guarding, or tightening the pelvic floor.

And once pain enters the picture, the cycle can become even harder: you anticipate pain, your body tightens to protect you, and that tension can make intimacy more painful.

This is why having choices during intimacy matters so much.

“Not that deep.”
“Less movement.”
“Let’s try something different.”

Those aren’t rejections of intimacy. They’re ways of staying connected without abandoning what your body is telling you.

Sometimes helping the body feel safer starts with knowing:

I still have control.
I still have choices.
My body still belongs to me — even when I say yes. ❤️

I used to see behavior I didn’t like and immediately start looking for an explanation.

Maybe they were stressed.
Maybe something happened that day.
Maybe they didn’t mean it like that.

But the truth was, I usually didn’t know.

I was making assumptions — and somehow, every assumption I made gave the other person an excuse.

So now, if I’m going to make an assumption, I make a different one:

If someone behaves in a way I don’t want repeated, I assume they’re capable of doing it again.

I don’t need to decide immediately what it means about them.

I don’t need to turn one bad moment into their entire personality.

But I also don’t need to invent a reason why it doesn’t count.

Sometimes the first time isn’t a one-off.

Sometimes it’s a preview.

Sometimes it means:

There’s more where that came from.

If you found yourself chasing someone who kept pulling away, it’s easy to ask yourself:

“What was wrong with me?”

Maybe a different question is:

“What did my nervous system learn was dangerous?”

If you grew up around yelling, slammed doors, harsh criticism, unpredictable tempers, or never knowing when someone would suddenly become angry, your body may have learned that conflict was the biggest threat.

So when you later met someone who withdrew instead of exploded, your nervous system may have quietly thought:

“At least they’re not yelling.”

“At least I’m not walking on eggshells today.”

“At least no one is calling me names.”

“At least no one is throwing things or slamming doors.”

Being ignored still hurts.

Being ghosted still hurts.

Being emotionally unavailable still hurts.

But our nervous systems don’t always compare unhealthy relationships to healthy ones.

Sometimes they compare one painful experience to another and choose the one that feels less dangerous.

Understanding this isn’t about excusing emotional distance, ghosting, or inconsistent behavior.

It’s about replacing shame with understanding.

Because when we understand why something felt safer, we can begin teaching our nervous system that there are more than two options.

There are relationships where people don’t disappear.

And they don’t explode either.

Those are the relationships we deserve to recognize, trust, and eventually choose.

Healing isn’t always quiet, graceful, or peaceful.

Sometimes it’s exhaustion. Sometimes it’s frustration. Sometimes it’s realizing that you simply can’t keep carrying, tolerating, or repeating the same thing anymore.

And sometimes, “enough is enough is enough” is where something begins to change.
