ASL Expressive Practice: Driver’s Emotions

In ASL, it’s essential to show how you feel—whether it’s happiness, anger, excitement, hysteria, or beyond. Facial expressions, body language, and role shifting bring your storytelling to life.

Activity: Choose a driver character and practice role shifting to show how they feel during a car race or driving scene. Use expressive ASL to portray their emotions clearly—are they calm, furious, thrilled, or panicked?

Goal: Let the audience see and feel the emotion through your performance. Make the driver’s experience come alive!

DARK! More English Idioms in ASL

English idioms are fun to explore! Signing each English word one by one can be a starting point, but the words alone may not show the idiom’s intended meaning. Understanding the idea and context helps us express it clearly in ASL and interpret it accessibly for Deaf and DeafBlind people.

Here are six examples:
*In the dark: I was in the dark.
*A dark cloud: A dark cloud hung over her.
*A dark day: It was a dark day.
*Keep someone in the dark: They kept me in the dark.
*A black sheep: He was the black sheep.
*A dark horse: The dark horse surprised everyone and won.

This video page is for ASL students, ITP students, working interpreters, parents of Deaf children, Teachers of the Deaf, and friends of Deaf and DeafBlind communities. Hearing learners who are new to ASL are welcome, too!

Enjoy my DARK video page!

Another pun intended: BOOKWORM!

What is a pun? A pun is playful wordplay that uses double meanings or similar-sounding words to create humor. Deaf signers also create visual wordplay and jokes in ASL, using signs, movement, and facial expressions.

My friend is a true bookworm! She loves reading and can spend hours with books at a bookstore or library. We tease her by playfully exaggerating how much she reads.

Watch the progression:

*Read a book.
*Read book after book—every day!
*Get so absorbed in reading that you become a bookworm!

I show three levels of intensity: natural, a little stronger, and exaggerated. A fun example of visual wordplay in ASL! Enjoy our pun of the day!

Reposting everyone’s favorite pun—“a very LONG one!” 😂

It has been a long, long, LONG week of multitasking and working on many projects! Your amazing comments made my day. As for the nonsense comments? I simply ignored them. 😉

Your support makes a huge impact on our Deaf and DeafBlind communities. Thank you! Again—it has been a long, long, LONG week!

What is a pun?

In Deaf communities, puns are playful signs we create and use for fun. Naturally, we would sign LONG—but for this joke, we exaggerate the sign…and then stretch it even longer…and longer…until it becomes humor in the visual space!

It’s a perfect example of how Deaf people transform everyday signs into creative, expressive play.

REPOSTING: Another Round of Sound Effects—This Time, It’s All About Drinks!

ASL in Motion: Drink It In!

Explore how Non-Manual Signals (NMS), facial expressions, body movements, rhythm, and classifier depictions can bring drink-related sounds and actions to life in ASL.

Practice visually expressing:

✨ Popping
✨ Shaking
✨ Whooshing
✨ Twisting
✨ A cork popping
✨ Pouring
✨ Slurping
✨ Glasses clinking
✨ Fizzing
✨ Toasting
✨ Crunching ice

REPOSTING FOR HALLOWEEN! 🎃

ASL Regional Accents: Celebrating the Beauty of Signing Differently

Happy Halloween! 👻

During my travels through 49 states, I kept journal notes about the Deaf people I met—and wow, the variety in their signing was incredible!

Regional accents are treasures passed down through families, Deaf schools, mainstream programs, and vibrant social circles.

ASL is not one-size-fits-all. It is shaped by culture, community, geography, education, and lived experiences. There is not always one “right” or “wrong” sign—sometimes, there are simply different ways to express the same idea.

Some signers hold on to the unique signs they grew up with, while others adapt their signing depending on the person or community around them.

For example, some people use the “#H” handshape influenced by Signed Exact English. Others use a round classifier handshape to represent a pumpkin or its face. Many of my friends sign HALLOWEEN differently—and that is perfectly okay!

There is no need to criticize one another. ASL is rich with variation, and every signer brings their own style, history, and story to the language.

Let’s celebrate this beautiful diversity and respect the signs people grew up using.

🧡 Every ASL accent tells a story. 🧡
