🦀 What Is “Crab Theory”?

Sometimes when one crab tries to climb out of a bucket, the other crabs pull it back down.

People can act this way too. When someone grows, succeeds, learns, heals, or starts shining brightly, others may criticize them instead of cheering for them.

That is often called crab mentality.

🦚 What Peacock Wants Readers to Remember:

• Your joy is allowed.
• Growth may bother some people.
• Keep dancing anyway.
• Support others who are rising.
• Be the crab who cheers.

In every community, including Deaf communities, people sometimes disagree, compare, gossip, or discourage growth. But communities become stronger when we celebrate one another, uplift one another, and make room for everyone to rise.

In July 2023, in Chicago, I painted what abundance meant to me: endless water, endless grapes, and endless peacock feathers. At the time, it was simply a painting.

A few months later, I hosted a fall painting gathering around a bonfire in my backyard. That night, I painted hands signing “forgive” in front of a rising phoenix.

Just a few months after that, I nearly lost my life.

Every day since, I’ve had to choose forgiveness for people who used my crisis for their own gain. Some days, that choice is harder than others.

Looking back, those paintings hold meaning I couldn’t have understood when I created them.

Come with me to Deaf Lit Fest! ✨

I’m so excited to meet Nović for the first time—I have several of her hardcovers! And today, I finally get to meet Brittany Castle. I read her handshape book while developing The Deaf Mainstreamed Peacock, so this feels especially meaningful.

I always try to put myself in rooms with people I can learn from. Today, I’m attending as a fellow author, spending the day in workshops and learning from some of the best Deaf authors in the industry!

Book 3 got a glow-up! 🦚✨ After the August version printed too dark, I gutted it, revamped it, and uploaded brighter art.

Book 4 is nearly finished, and all five books are coming together—familiar characters return in Books 4 and 5 for some full-circle moments. 💙📚
