Leavings are seeped in the bittersweet weight of impermanence. The word “nostalgia” comes from the Greek “nostos,” meaning “homecoming,” and “algos,” meaning “grief” - we’re not home yet, and it hurts. We are constantly moving towards something and away from something else. Every time I pack the two duffle bags I bought when I left for college, I’m reminded that we are each a pilgrim on this earth; foreigners in search of a heavenly home.

The mission of the ranch lies in the constant coming and going. While the hands and feet who serve are forever changing, a community that sacrifices to work hard and love harder persists. It is the monastic and missional church in all senses. Like the fine dust that coats everything and makes the water run brown off your hands in the sink, the Lord’s evident presence is inescapable. To be known and loved by this place and its people has been the greatest gift. In the valley, I’ve seen a glimpse of Eden enough to know that life itself is liminal, but God is the one from which we have come and the one to whom we are going.

In this world, we may never be home, but Lost Valley is as close as we can get. by @aspenjon_es
