Not every dog needs to be your dog’s friend. ❤️

One of the most valuable things we can teach our dogs is how to exist calmly around other dogs without feeling the need to interact with them.

It’s about building confidence, developing impulse control and teaching our dogs that they don’t need to react to every dog they see.

The goal isn’t to avoid the world around us. It’s to teach our dogs how to navigate it.

Calm. Confident. Neutral.

Because a well-trained dog isn’t just one that listens when nothing is happening — it’s one that can make good decisions when the world around them is full of distractions.

At Aspire K9, we want to build dogs that can thrive in the real world. 🐕

“I wish my dog would just behave like that” is something that gets said to me a lot while I am out with the dogs. Just because you see the dogs being well behaved doesn’t mean they were born with the good behaviour built in🐕‍🦺🦮

One of these dogs is my own dog, who had his issues, and the other two are dogs from different households. One of the dogs has a bite history and could be reactive to other dogs, and the other was very reactive to both dogs and people. Yet we can now all enjoy a walk together🤝

Calm solo and group walks are built through foundations — loose-lead work, engagement, impulse control, neutrality and teaching dogs to follow guidance rather than constantly reacting to everything around them.

So just because you see a well behaved dog out and about, don’t think they were born with naturally good behaviour built in. There more often than not has been training to get them where they are today💪🏽

Train your dog and you can enjoy your dog❤️

A confident dog isn’t created by keeping them in a bubble. 🐾

Exposure isn’t about throwing your puppy into every situation and hoping they “get used to it.” It’s about thoughtful, positive experiences at the right pace. Allowing them to observe, process and explore without overwhelming them.

The goal?

A dog who can walk into a new environment and think, “I’ve got this.”
A dog who can experience something unfamiliar without immediately becoming worried, frantic or overexcited.

Because we don’t want dogs who are simply tolerant of the world.

We want dogs who are comfortable in it.

🌎 Confident
🧠 Resilient
🤝 Connected
🐕 Unbothered

Build the foundations early, and you’re giving your puppy the skills to navigate the human world with confidence.

Raise them in the world, not away from it by @aspirek9_

Of course we should show our dogs affection. BUT when we give that affection can be just as important as the affection itself.

Dogs learn through consequences. If a behaviour is followed by something they enjoy — attention, affection, praise, play or food — that behaviour can become more likely to happen again.

So, for example…

🐕 Your dog jumps up → you stroke them
🐕 Your dog demands attention → you give them attention
🐕 Your dog is whining or barking → you comfort and fuss them
🐕 Your dog is nervous or overexcited → you constantly reassure them with affection

To us, this might simply feel like comforting or loving our dog.

But from the dog’s perspective, we may be reinforcing the behaviour or emotional state that came immediately before the affection.

That doesn’t mean you should ignore your dog or never comfort them. It means we need to be conscious of what we’re rewarding and when.

Instead, look for the behaviours and states of mind you want to see more of.

✨ Calm → affection
✨ Four paws on the floor → attention
✨ Settled beside you → fuss
✨ Choosing to disengage → praise
✨ Relaxed and composed → reward

Reward the dog you want to see more of🐶

Kujo’s first trial, 17 weeks old: TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS 2026
🏆1st Place Puppy Long Send (0-6 months)
🏆2nd Place Junior Class (7-12 months)

The little lad did so good❤️
Coming 5th in Puppy Class (0-6 months) due to my bad handling, he smashed the stations in that class that I did do right🤣

Thank you for a great trial @_apex_empire @mrs_apexk9 and thank you for the trial prep @dmd_k9 (and advising me to enter him the junior class)

🐾 EVERYDAY ENCOUNTERS 🐾

What a day. ❤️

Our first Everyday Encounters brought together past clients and their dogs for a day focused on taking everything they’ve learned and putting it into practice in real life.

From home and car manners, working calmly around other dogs and people, the café experience and confidence-building obstacles, to plenty of challenges designed to test both dog and human.

We even threw in our very own doggy sports day 🏆🐶 — bringing a bit of friendly competition and plenty of laughs to the afternoon.

But the biggest wins weren’t necessarily the dogs who did everything perfectly.

They were the moments where a dog tried something they previously couldn’t. Where an owner recognised something sooner. Where someone became aware of their own thoughts, emotions or body language. Where a dog and human worked through a challenge together.

And after a full day of doing, learning and challenging ourselves, we finished in the complete opposite way…

By doing nothing.

Breathwork. Meditation. Slowing everything down. 🧘‍♂️🐾

Because being able to regulate ourselves, become present and find calm is just as important as anything we can teach our dogs.

Sometimes the biggest change starts with us.

Awareness. Progress. Confidence. Connection. ❤️

A massive thank you to everyone who came along and made our first Everyday Encounters such a brilliant day, and to Holly from @aspirek9_ for putting it all together with me.

Judging by the smiles, laughs and slightly competitive energy during the sports day… I don’t think this will be the last one 😂🏆

Training creates skills. Lifestyle creates behaviour.

We’re raising dogs in a human world — so they need to learn how to live in it🌇

My life requires me to travel a lot so I don’t want the dogs to only be comfortable at home or on their usual walks. I want them to be able to experience life alongside us — the café, the beach, the shops, the woods, the car, busy environments, quiet environments… all of it. 🌎

Our dogs don’t live in a dog-only world. They live in our world, and teaching them how to confidently navigate it is such an important part of training.

The goal isn’t to build our lives around our dogs. It’s to teach them how to fit into the lives we already live. ❤️

We should live WITH our dogs, not live AROUND our dogs.

That means exposure, guidance, boundaries, confidence and learning how to switch off wherever we go.

Because a well-rounded dog isn’t one that only behaves in perfect conditions — it’s one that can come along for the ride. 🐕‍🦺
