Exhibition of artists from @royal_sculptors exhibiting @hyphastudios 8th Oct-15th Nov. Curated by @studioalexandracarr and @breeze1778
POSTS STORIES REELS
It started with an exhibition. It may lead somewhere unexpected. When Alex Breeze @breeze1778 and I (Alexandra Carr @studioalexandracarr ) began developing Assembly, we wanted to create an opportunity for artists to bring their work together without having to fit a predetermined theme. The first exhibition at the Abject Gallery in Sunderland gave that idea a place to begin. Assembly has grown in ways we couldn’t have fully anticipated. The move to Hypha Studios has brought the work to a new audience, while the experience of making two exhibitions together has encouraged artists to think about what else might be possible. There have been conversations about future collaborations, new exhibitions and even taking Assembly to an international venue. These are early discussions rather than settled plans, but the fact that they are happening feels significant. Artists are thinking bigger, making connections and recognising what can be achieved when a group of people gets behind an idea. For us, this is a reason to keep going. Assembly is developing into a biennial rooted in Sunderland, with ambitions that extend beyond the exhibition itself. Alongside future shows, we want to create opportunities for sculptors through ambitious projects, collaborations, residencies and prizes, bringing artists into contact with new places, people and possibilities. Many of these opportunities will be open to artists beyond the Royal Society of Sculptors, with the aim of contributing to a wider, more connected sculptural community. There is so much happening across the North East, and we want to help create the conditions for more of it to be seen, supported and brought into conversation with the wider art world. We’re taking some time to reflect on what these first exhibitions have set in motion. There is plenty still to work out, but the conversations have begun and we’re looking forward to seeing where they lead. More to come. Follow @assembly_rss_exhibition for future developments. Assembly, in a new light. When Assembly first came together at the Abject Gallery in Sunderland, the works found their place among the building’s period features. At Hypha Studios, Southbank, the setting is altogether different. The industrial architecture brings new relationships into focus. Works that once sat among historic details now meet exposed structures, harder surfaces and different expanses of space. Some artists have brought new pieces; others have developed their contributions or made different selections for this iteration. The exhibition has changed in scale, rhythm and emphasis as a result. There is a particular pleasure in seeing how differently an artwork can read when its surroundings change. Some works have become quieter, their focus more concentrated; others have grown in ambition. The exuberance of the original exhibition remains, but this is not simply a second presentation of the same show. Bringing Assembly to Southbank during Frieze week gives these artists an opportunity to reach new audiences and place their work in a wider conversation about contemporary sculpture. It also offers a glimpse of what can happen when artists are given the space and freedom to experiment. Sunderland was the starting point for Assembly, and we are excited by the possibilities for ambitious, artist-led projects that the North East can offer. There is real potential here to bring artists, distinctive places and new ideas together in ways that are not always easy to realise elsewhere. We hope Assembly encourages more people to look towards the region, discover what is already happening and imagine what else might be possible. Assembly at Hypha Studios, Southbank. The people who make it possible. One of the best things about taking Assembly to London has been seeing how much the artists have invested in making it happen. The exhibition is a collective effort. Artists have helped pull the show together, supported one another through the practicalities of installation and brought a generosity that extends well beyond their own work. Since the first exhibition in Sunderland, many have got to know each other much better. Conversations have continued, relationships have developed, and ideas for working together again have started to emerge. That sense of community is one of the things that makes the Royal Society of Sculptors such a valuable part of an artist’s life. The opportunity to encounter other practices, exchange experience and find people who understand the particular challenges and pleasures of making sculpture can have an impact that reaches far beyond a single exhibition. We’ll be continuing these conversations on Thursday 15 October, 6.30–8.30pm, at Hypha Studios, Southbank, with a panel discussion chaired by Barbara Beyer, bringing together artists Alexandra Carr, Sally de Courcy, Gillian Brent and Almuth Tebbenhoff. Beginning with the story behind Assembly, the conversation will open up the experiences and decisions that shape an artist’s practice, from the development of an idea and the choices involved in making work to the different demands of working at different scales and in different contexts. It promises to be an opportunity to hear directly from artists about the realities of making sculpture, the thinking behind their work and what happens when ideas move from the studio into the world. If you’re in London, we’d love you to join us. Artist spotlight - Sally Barker Sally is exhibiting 'Solar Thrive Meets Dark Cloud' @hyphastudios as part of @assembly_rss_exhibition in London. Solar Thrive is a felled tree trunk, embedded with a cluster of bright yellow ceramic pieces, protruding outwards. These ceramics are individually formed by tightly pinching clay, to leave a mark, a fingerprint, on each one. Emerging from the dead tree trunk like fungi- a strange human invasion mimicking nature. The brightness of Solar Thrive is countered by its brooding partner Dark Cloud, hanging above. Hundreds of ceramic fingerprint pieces, intricately wired together, reminiscent of a neural network. These two linked pieces using embodied and natural materials, converge as part of an ongoing exploration into our complex, hazardous and often destructive relationship with the natural environment. https://sallybarker.org/ @sallyjbarker ‘Assembly’, is a contemporary art showcase from @royal_sculptors exhibiting @hyphastudios curated by @studioalexandracarr and @breeze1778 Assembly Hypha Gallery South Bank Gallery 3 42 Southwark Bridge Road London SE1 9EU Private View: 12th October 2026, 6-9pm Exhibition Dates: 8th October – 15th November 2026 Opening Hours: Thursday–Sunday, 12–6pm Admission: Free With thanks to @breezecreatives @hyperbolicorange and @artofwine.art Images courtesy of the artist. by @assembly_rss_exhibition

Hypha Studios South Bank / Gallery 3, 42 Southwark Bridge Rd, London, SE1 9EU 8th October – 15th November 2026 Assembly began in Sunderland as an experiment in artistic freedom, exchange and collaboration. The London presentation continues that spirit while allowing the works to enter into dialogue with the distinctive context of Southbank and the international activity surrounding Frieze. ‘Assembly’ is co-curated by @studioalexandracarr and @breeze1778 with support from: @royal_sculptors @breezecreatives @abjectgallery @movinggallerysunderland @hyphastudios 📸 @steverussellstudios #artevents #paneldiscussion #materiality #royal_sculptors by @assembly_rss_exhibition
Artist spotlight - Kate Davis and David Moore Kate and David is exhibiting 'Listen' and 'Product of Our Own Making (Magritte #1)' @hyphastudios as part of @assembly_rss_exhibition in London. Listen Listen, is an orange LED neon that originates from a poem we wrote in response to the death of a parent. Operating as both artwork and directive, listen shifts attention from sight to sound, heightening one’s awareness of the surrounding environment. The work invites viewers to attune to the acoustic and atmospheric qualities of the space. Drawing on the visual language of neon signage, it balances poetic gesture with functional instruction, recalling the authority of public signage while redirecting it toward sensory attention. Site-responsive in nature, its placement shapes its resonance within any given location. Product of Our Own Making (Magritte #1) Two re-purposed fire extinguishers inspired by Magritte’s sky paintings are meant as an emergency response to our current climate crisis, where a blue sky with white clouds could be required, as a promise of hope and restoration. Seen in public and domestic situations fire extinguishers are often hidden in plain sight. We choose not to see them as part of our aesthetic surroundings much in the same way that many of us have chosen to ignore the damage we are doing to our world by prioritising the comforts of modern living , developing blind spots to the wider environmental costs. https://sculptors.org.uk/artists/kate-davis-and-david-moore @headhearthole ‘Assembly’, is a contemporary art showcase from @royal_sculptors exhibiting @hyphastudios curated by @studioalexandracarr and @breeze1778 Assembly Hypha Gallery South Bank Gallery 3 42 Southwark Bridge Road London SE1 9EU Private View: 12th October 2026, 6-9pm Exhibition Dates: 8th October – 15th November 2026 Opening Hours: Thursday–Sunday, 12–6pm Admission: Free With thanks to @breezecreatives @hyperbolicorange and @artofwine.art Images courtesy of the artist. by @assembly_rss_exhibition
What started as a conversation between artists about experimenting with new work quickly grew into a group exhibition in a beautiful space, with an energy none of us had anticipated. Sometimes, the best thing to do is follow an instinct and see where it leads. We’re trusting that energy, creating the conditions for it to grow, and seeing what comes into view. @assembly_rss_exhibition will be a continuing thread in Hyperbolic Orange. There’s more taking shape. If you’d like to be part of what’s next, subscribe via the link in bio @hyperbolicorange by @assembly_rss_exhibition

Every now and then I express my astonishment at the way of the world by making ‘eyes’. I sometimes repurpose existing pieces to make new eyes. The ceramic discs with perforations started as an experiment to find out how big a clay disc I could make that would fit into my kiln. I slabbed and stabbed the clay and then fired the result. These two slabs made it through the firing. Explore this piece and the work of 34 other brilliant sculptors at the RSS exhibition ‘Assembly’. Artist spotlight - Susanne Schmidt-Nielsen Susanne is exhibiting 'in a thin house / a blurred gaze / breathing / , 2025, 2026, 2026,' @hyphastudios as part of @assembly_rss_exhibition in London. The work reflects on what it means to be human – how we shape and find our form through our encounter with others and the unknown. In 2025 the work took its form at IFO Center ArtHall, Bromolla, Sweden. When the exhibition ended, it was dismantled, a process that altered and unsettled the piece. In 2026 the same matter was brought to Abject Gallery / Moving Gallery, Sunderland, UK. Here the work found a new state of being, as a continued process of changing and becoming. At Hypha Studio, London, UK, the work has become again - the same, but anew. https://susanneschmidt-nielsen.com/ @susanneschmidtnielsen ‘Assembly’, is a contemporary art showcase from @royal_sculptors exhibiting @hyphastudios curated by @studioalexandracarr and @breeze1778 Assembly Hypha Gallery South Bank Gallery 3 42 Southwark Bridge Road London SE1 9EU Private View: 12th October 2026, 6-9pm Exhibition Dates: 8th October – 15th November 2026 Opening Hours: Thursday–Sunday, 12–6pm Admission: Free With thanks to @breezecreatives @hyperbolicorange and @artofwine.art Images courtesy of the artist. by @assembly_rss_exhibition
