🎉A4A's first ever annual report is live!

“Despite the advice drummed into my 8-year-old kid brain by the band Boston – “Don’t Look Back” – I’m going to brave it and take a glance over the shoulder at this first year of Assets for Artists as an independent nonprofit.”
— Blair Benjamin, Executive Director

This report offers a look into all that we accomplished in our first year plus a peek at what we have planned for the year ahead.

Meet our current cohort artists! Jasleni Brito, from Ellington, is a member of our 2026 Greater Hartford Capacity-Building Program and Project Grant cohort.

Jasleni Brito is a Dominican-American visual artist and coach based in Connecticut. Her paintings are figurative, surrealist, and unapologetically colorful, rich with pattern, symbolism, and spiritual meaning, and rooted in her heritage and her belief that we all have the right to take up space and tell our own stories. She is the creator of the La Caribeña Oracle Deck and has exhibited throughout Connecticut. Alongside her art, she guides women through her coaching practice, The Art of Becoming, helping them reconnect to their confidence and creativity. With the support of Assets for Artists, she is beginning her most ambitious body of work yet, a painting series exploring what it means to be American from her own point of view. You can find her work and her story at jasleni.com. 🌟

Meet our current Capacity-Building Program artists! Tony(a) Lemos, from Conway, is a member of our 2026 Pioneer Valley ValleyCreates cohort.

Tony(a) is an interdisciplinary artist who uses printmaking, handmade books, botanical materials, ritual structures, and social practice to create situations of attention. Over the years, her practice has grown into Art that Breathes, a methodology rooted in relationship, reciprocity, and embodied attention. Tony(a) also loves teaching, and offers workshops in art, ecology, herbalism, and creative practice all over the country.

"My Substack, Art that Breathes, is where I share some of the ideas, questions, field notes, and practices that grow out of my studio work. I write about making art with and alongside the living world, herbalism, ritual, attention, small acts of care, and the ways creative practice can help us cultivate deeper relationships with place. I also teach two long-form, 10-month programs that meet once a month: the Botanical Art Program and The Art of the Grimoire. Both offer an opportunity to spend sustained time exploring art, plants, process, and creative practice in community."

More information about Tony(a)'s programs and upcoming workshops can be found on her website www.tonyalemosarts.com

Meet our current Capacity-Building Program artists! Kalyani Kastor, from Deerfield, is a member of our 2026 Pioneer Valley ValleyCreates cohort.

Kalyani is a multidisciplinary illustrator whose work centers on childhood whimsy, belonging, and her experience growing up in an adoptive family. Through illustration, printmaking, surface design, and animation she creates imaginative worlds that help her reconnect with a younger spirit of wonder.

Working full-time as a home goods pattern designer, Kalyani is drawn to the decorative, rhythmic, and methodical qualities of pattern making. She often incorporates repeating motifs with visual narratives to bridge the gap between illustration and decoration.

As her practice evolves, Kalyani is interested in combining her creative disciplines into multimedia works that celebrate loving connection, memory, and the joy of childhood imagination.

Meet our current Capacity-Building Program artists! Talysha Rivera, a photographer and cultural organizer from Springfield, is a member of our 2026 Pioneer Valley ValleyCreates cohort.

Talysha's practice centers on collaborative portraiture and community-building. Her work explores identity, freedom, and self-expression through visual narratives that blend ethereal, dreamlike qualities with emotional intimacy to create images that feel both expansive and deeply personal.

Out of a desire to feel more connected to the creative community in Springfield, Talysha has spend the past year intentionally working with other folks who identify as BIPOC and who are local to Springfield. Each project begins with connection: learning her subjects' stories, co-developing concepts, and creating imagery that reflects their essence and lived experience.

Pictured here are four of her recent collaborations with Springfield-based artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs.
1 - Renhie (@themirrah_ ) is a Reiki practitioner, holistic doula, and poet.
2 - Teah (@teahsflorals) is a florist, community organizer, and artist.
3 - Cayo & Damahya are the community organizers behind "Movement, Mood, and Food" (@move.moodfood) which hosts events bringing healthy eating habits and movement together in a fun and inclusive way.
4 - Sophie (@sophiemrkhm) a Springfield photographer photographed here with a prop made by Teah.
