8 years ago today I moved to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥳

What a journey it has been. The jump from Subsea 7 to CNOOC was CRAZY!!! 💰💰

And so was jumping from the safety net into Assigned Accounting but I wouldn’t change a thing.

Swipe through to see the numbers: £8.08 an hour at the airport, a @parxcafe barista job I loved, my first graduate role (and the car I still drive), all the way through oil and gas to £12,570 and running my own practice.

Every one of those numbers got me here. ✨

I see it all the time. People coming to me with “oh, I just have a little business, can you please help?”

Yes, some of you might just have a side hustle for some extra cash but many of you are running a proper business, earning good money. So you have to start treating it as a proper business in order to go places.

Dream BIG and you can achieve many amazing things. Just remember as you grow, you’ll most likely pay more taxes too, so be prepared for this. 💪💪

Paying more isn’t a bad thing. It means you’re growing. You just have to do it correctly. 🔥

I really cannot highlight this enough, do not spend the money just because it’s sitting in your account.

❌Chances are some of it is due to HMRC, some of it is for paying your suppliers. Every £ should be accounted for.

STOP putting fuel through your business account and calling it a business expense. The account you pay from does not make it tax deductible. The purpose of the journey does.

And no, just because it is for business does not mean you can claim that cost.

Please ask your accountant or read the HMRC guidelines.

The reality of running LTD is that you will be paying a lot of taxes. 🥲

Employer and Employee National Insurance
VAT (if registered)
Corporation Tax
Dividend Tax

Oh and confirmation statement payable to Company House is £50 😜

Make sure you get yourself familiar with all this before you go ahead and set up one.

It is not always more tax efficient to pay for these things via your limited company.

Just because someone on Instagram will tell you this is what you should do it doesn’t mean it’s valid for your business.

but hear me out! You cannot get meaningful numbers from your books unless every single transaction has been accounted for. Only then you know exactly how is your business actually doing.
