M F Husain's Untitled from circa 1990 brings together the winged horse, the palm, the calligraphic line, and pure geometric form.

Horses arrive in Husain's work as weather more than as animals, as a force that gathers, overtakes, and passes through the canvas.

On the left, a knot of equine heads and necks collides and doubles back on itself, manes rendered as agitated white strokes.

At the centre, a woman in a yellow dress pivots, one arm flung skyward, her twisting silhouette answering the horses' violent momentum with a human, deliberate motion.

To the right, the energy changes condition, gathered into a geometric register of horizontal bands and angular divisions.

The painting was exhibited in Husain: The Eternal Master: Selected Works from 1941 to 2011 and published in the accompanying volume.

S H Raza’s La Provence Noire, painted in 1965, stands at a crucial threshold between landscape and abstraction.

Its dense, nocturnal surface holds the memory of Indian forests, the flicker of firelight, and the first stirrings of the Bindu.
Raza regarded black as a mother colour, a source from which other colours could emerge.

The painting was exhibited in Raza Rendezvous: A Selection of Works, 1940 to 2000, and published in Understanding Raza: Many Ways of Looking at a Master.
