“Tell me about yourself.”

Such a simple question. Yet when life changes, it can be surprisingly hard to answer.

On Saturday 10 October, join us in Somerset for Find Your Story, a day to recognise the experiences that have shaped you and find the confidence to share them.

You’ll create a verbal ‘movie trailer’ of your life.

Film script writer Sarah Swords will help you discover the thread running through your story. Actor vocal coach Milly Ellis will help you tell it with warmth and clarity. Together, we’ll explore story through film and theatre, with time to reflect, practise and talk in a small, supportive group.

I’ve never grown dahlias before this year, and this vase is bringing me so much joy.

The credit goes to my partner Darren. He loves dahlias and brought these plants on before planting them out. Yesterday we visited the wonderful community garden @wearerootconnections where he bought me some cut flowers. They reminded me that our own dahlias from @dahliabeach were growing in a far corner of the garden I hadn’t visited for weeks.

So off I went with my secateurs, hoping they might be doing something. And hey presto. Look at them!

They went into the ground late, and for a while they looked rather sorry for themselves (due I think to the heat and lack of watering due to hose pipe ban and prioritising veg watering). I followed Andie’s advice to cut out the primary stem months ago for more flowers and longer stems. Then the rain came, and they found their stride.

Thank you, @rootedconnections, for prompting me to go and look. There are plenty more buds to come. I’ll follow @dahliabeach Andie’s advice on lifting the tubers when the time comes, but for now I’m just enjoying having these on the table. 🌸

The Generous Gardener has given us one last beautiful pink bloom of summer. It feels like the right rose to share after today.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Kitchen Garden Open Day. There was such generosity and connection in the garden today. We loved sharing advice on plants and seeds, and seeing you head home with arms full of goodies for your own gardens.

Wander the garden, chat about what you’re growing and browse herbs, seeds, plants and fruit trees. There’ll be antiques to explore, too.

A little change to refreshments: Nicole, who usually looks after the tea and coffee, is poorly. We’re wishing her well and giving her the day to recover. Neil wil be on tea and coffee duty, and has dashed to the supermarket for biscuits. Plan B is in place! ☕🍪

One of the great joys of buying from independent businesses is meeting the maker.

Yesterday, at the @dursladefarmhouse Durslade Farm Shop at Hauser & Wirth Somerset, I met Debs, the founder of Forthay Granola.

Debs began making granola for guests at her beautiful Cotswold B&B. They loved it so much that they encouraged her to sell it. Today, her granola and granola bars are stocked in more than 300 farm shops.

I love stories like this. Someone takes a talent, makes something genuinely good and turns it into a thriving business.

I’d bought the granola before, but this was my first encounter with the granola bars. They are delicious. Each packet contains two bars. Darren ate one before I could photograph it, and I ate half of the other while setting up the shot. So, for the record, the bars are twice the size of the one pictured!

Debs had such lovely energy. It was a real pleasure to meet the woman behind something made so well.

If you spot Forthay in your local farm shop, give it a try.

A cool August night means a few extra jobs before bed.

With temperatures forecast to drop to around 7°C, Chris @pennardplants recommended closing the glasshouse and polytunnel to hold onto the warmth that’s built up during the day. Outside, we’ve covered the tomatoes and chillies with horticultural fleece to help protect them from the sudden temperature drop.

The important bit comes tomorrow morning. As soon as the day begins to warm up, we’ll remove the fleece and open up the glasshouse and polytunnel so the plants get plenty of light, fresh air and good ventilation to clear the humidity.

Growing well is often about the small decisions you make at exactly the right time.

After weeks of hot, dry weather, we finally had some proper rain this morning.

I can’t remember the last time I was quite so pleased to see it. We’ve been watering constantly, but some of the ornamental borders were really starting to struggle.

Walking around afterwards, it genuinely felt as though the whole garden had breathed a sigh of relief.

Here’s hoping there’s a little more to come. Although perhaps not on Sunday 2 August, as that’s our next Kitchen Garden Open Day!

If you’re nearby, do come and join us between 10.00am and 4.00pm in Leigh-on-Mendip, Somerset. There’ll be home-made cakes and refreshments, plenty of plants, antiques, gardening advice and, of course, a chance to wander around the kitchen garden and see what’s growing.

The @asterionandco kitchen garden is beginning to tip into that wonderful stage of the season when everything seems to ripen at once.

Today’s harvest includes three different courgette varieties, White Pattypan squash, baby aubergines and the first of what promises to be a mountain of tomatoes – all grown from @PennardPlants seeds.

Many tomatoes will never make it as far as the kitchen. They’re simply too irresistible to walk past without picking and eating straight from the vine!

The rest? The preserving season is almost here. There’ll be batches heading for the freezer, jars waiting to be filled, and plenty of fermenting too. It’s one of the most satisfying parts of the gardening year – turning the abundance of summer into food that will see us through the months ahead.

There’s still plenty more to come.
