I recently got a new watch in for review. It’s called the Navy 36 KM-1940 by PHG (Precision Heritage Gear). The watch is inspired by two similar WW2-era military watches: the Kreigsmarine deck watch and the British ATP. The ATP is a precursor to the much more famous Dirty Dozen watches and they were issued from 1939 onwards unlike the Dirty Dozen watches which made an appearance much later when the war in Europe was almost over. The ATP watches were manufactured by 17 different brands, albeit ones with lesser prestige than the makers that made up the Dirty Dozen, which probably helps to explain why they aren’t anywhere near as well known. Of course PHG wasn’t one of those brands, but the Navy 36 KM-1940 is a pretty faithful homage to the ATP only upsized to 36mm and fitted with a quartz movement. It’s not often I buy two of the same watch in different colours, variety of the spice of life after all so why would you want two identical watches, but I couldn’t decide whether to buy the Casio Forester in black and green or black and tan so I went with both. by @astimedecides

I’ve had the Venezianico Nereide Bronzo 39 for a couple of weeks now and I still can’t take my eyes off it. I love the contrast between the darkening bronze bezel and case and the ivory coloured dial with golden markers and hands. The only thing I dislike is the way the bronze patinas randomly and unevenly. I guess that’s the appeal for most people, but every time I see a random splodge of patina on the bezel or whatnot it really gets under my skin! Give me faux patina PVD bronze that doesn’t age any day! by @astimedecides

I have been desperately searching for a pink dial dress watch all summer, but couldn’t find one with the right tone of pink. I even eyed this Timex Marlin a few times before, but wasn’t sure the yellow gold and pink was a great combination especially as it came on some tacky matching expansion band which made it look more like a lame fashion watch. This week I finally pulled the trigger, swapped out the bracelet, and unlocked the beautiful vintage-inspired mechanical dress watch it truly is. Sometimes all it takes is the right strap or bracelet to transform how a watch looks and feels. These Marlin reissues are still some of the best affordable dress watches on the market, especially if you can bag one in a sale or on the secondary market. A no brainer if you’re looking for your first mechanical dress watch. by @astimedecides

A broken watch is right twice a day so they say. Sadly this charming little Pulsar watch has a dodgy movement and as such it no longer works. But it was the first proper watch I ever owned and wore and was a gift from my mother. I keep meaning to get a new movement dropped into it but I have just never gotten around to it. by @astimedecides

I’ve always liked small watches but this 31.5mm Tissot has made me realise I can wear even smaller watches than I ever thought possible. The only problem is I’m now eyeing other smaller watches like the pink-on-pink Patek Philippe 3796, a slightly more recent version of the legendary 96. by @astimedecides

The Casio Forester is a cheap field watch with a resin case and a Velcro strap yet it is still nails the field watch aesthetic. It’s a great watch for outdoor adventures where the prospect of damaging a more expensive watch is too risky. by @astimedecides

Sometimes the cheapest watches can be the most interesting. This one cost me a little over 20 pounds and yet the street scene dial and rustic hand wound mechanical movement are quite charming. by @astimedecides

When I was first starting out as a watch collector around 7 years ago, I thought Casio was the bees knees. But it wasn’t the digital ones that attracted me, it was the weird quirky analogue quartz watches Casio only tends to sell in Eastern markets like this one: the MTP-1253. The two-tone finish and strange integrated case design really caught my eye. The quality of watches has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years and watches like this Casio no longer hold up in comparison, yet somehow I still find this watch intriguing. It has to be said that quality is not the be all and end all when it comes to watches. by @astimedecides

On the wrist today is the @areanostalgiawatches Clocktower Manchester Edition, a watch that epitomises the brand and its founder Kieron aka @toptierticker One of the best things about getting into watches is the friends you make along the way. I have known Kieron since he had just a few hundred YouTube subscribers, and now a few short years later he has a huge channel with well over 100k subscribers and his very own watch brand. I hope the brand continues to go from strength to strength not only because he deserves the success but also because seeing Kieron live his dream has inspired me to start working on my own watch, something I’m sure would’ve only remained a pipe dream had we never met. by @astimedecides

Specht & Sohne is one of the most shameless of the so-called ‘homage’ brands on AliExpress with almost everything it puts out a direct ripoff of another watch. This quartz dress watch is almost a one-to-one copy of the Naoya Hida Type 5A which most people will take exception with, except the Type 5A itself might be considered an homage to the Patek Philippe Gondolo 5010 and of course all rectangular dress watches can be traced back to the Cartier Tank. It raises interesting questions like what level of copying is acceptable? And why are some brands given a free pass for taking more than mere inspiration from other brands? As far as this Specht & Sohne watch goes, it’s actually a nicely made watch for the money, it’s just a shame the design is unoriginal. by @astimedecides
